Roberto Campos (Original scouting report 4/16/2023 by Chris Brown)
Physical Description: Tall and well proportioned, with strength throughout. May continue to get stronger, but looks like a big-league athlete already.
Hit: 40
Solid bat-to-ball skills and a decent idea of the zone. Will expand on sliders and struggles with offspeed. Shows a quick, powerful swing, but his flat swing plane results in tons of ground balls.
Power: 55
Approaching plus-plus raw power thanks to bat speed and pure strength. Strong enough to hit line drives over the wall to the opposite field, but his power plays much lower in games due to that flat swing.
Speed: 45
Fringe-average runner now, but projects to lose a step in the near future. Unlikely to be a real threat on the bases, but could become an opportunistic base stealer.
Defense: 50
Solid defender. Has played a lot of center field so far in pro ball, but given his below-average range, and how large he already is as a 19-year-old, he will almost certainly move to a corner. He gets pretty good reads off the bat and has the arm to handle right.
Arm: 55
Shows above-average arm strength, with throws that have decent carry and solid accuracy.
Overall: Campos is still mostly a ball of clay. His feel for the game is better than expected given his age and experience, and he might have the most raw power in the system. He needs to overhaul his swing to get more balls in the air and fully untap that power, and he’ll have to work on not chasing sliders away against better pitchers. If everything comes together, he could be a prototypical right fielder.
2025 update:
Roberto Campos – 2025 Scouting Report (updated 3/4/2025 by Rogelio Castillo)
Physical Description:
Campos remains a physically imposing athlete, now listed at 6’3″ and around 210-215 lbs. He’s added some strength but still moves well for his size. His frame suggests he’ll continue to fill out, reinforcing his power potential while possibly slowing him down a bit defensively.
Hit: 40 → 45
Campos has made incremental improvements in his bat-to-ball skills, with a slightly better approach and fewer chases on breaking balls. However, he still struggles with recognizing quality offspeed pitches, particularly away. His ground ball rates remain high, limiting his ability to tap into his raw power fully. While his contact skills have improved slightly, the need for a swing adjustment to elevate the ball more consistently is still a major factor in his development.
Power: 55 → 60
His raw power is undeniable, and he has shown the ability to drive the ball to all fields with authority. However, his game power still lags behind due to his swing plane. There have been some encouraging signs of added loft, leading to an uptick in extra-base hits, but he hasn’t fully unlocked his potential yet. If he can improve his launch angle, 30+ home run potential is still very real.
Speed: 45 → 40
Now closer to a below-average runner, Campos has started to slow down as expected due to his added strength. He won’t be a stolen base threat but still moves well enough to take extra bases when needed.
Defense: 50 → 45
As projected, Campos has begun playing exclusively in a corner outfield spot due to declining range. His instincts and reads remain solid, but his lack of quickness limits his coverage. He is now more suited for right field, where he can make up for some of his range limitations with his arm.
Arm: 55
His above-average arm strength is still a weapon, with consistent accuracy and good carry. He should remain an asset in right field, making strong, accurate throws to hold runners in check.
Overall:
Campos remains an intriguing power-hitting prospect with some of the best raw power in the Tigers’ system, but his ground ball tendencies and approach against offspeed pitches continue to be his biggest hurdles. If he can make a swing adjustment to get more lift on the ball, his offensive ceiling is high, making him a potential middle-of-the-order bat. Defensively, he’s settling into a corner outfield role, likely in right field, where his arm will play well.
ETA: Late 2026 – 2027
Ceiling: Middle-of-the-order power hitter with 30+ HR potential in right field.
Floor: Bench/platoon bat if the swing and approach don’t fully develop.
