Eduardo Rodríguez
Tigers pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez throws a pitch against Pirates during the fifth inning on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Comerica Park.

This is the second in the Player Profile series (you can read the first one here) and the first pitcher version. We thought that, similar to the first hitter one, there should be a preview of pitchers, so you can see what to expect as we focus on Eduardo Rodriguez.

The thought is that the format will be identical. There will be the graphic and a few fun facts at that time would be specified for the player. Here’s the breakdown of what you can expect to see, followed up by the graphic:

  • Top left we can see the movement for each of the player pitches, both vertical and horizontal movement. The horizontal movement is from the catchers perspective, and both are in inches. This includes all pitches thrown by the pitcher.
  • The top middle shows a breakdown in percentage of the type of balls thrown by the pitcher. It’s broken down by fastballs, breaking balls, and offspeed pitches. Also in there is the legend that applies to all of the plots you see. The colors match across the board.
  • The top right shows the spin rate for every pitch thrown. You can get a good idea of the average spin rate in there, as well as some of the possible outliers.
  • Across the entire bottom is the speed for each pitch. The higher the arch, the more the pitches reached that speed.

  • There are 1473 pitcher/pitch combos that have ended 10 or more PA. Eduardo Rodriguez’s 4-Seam fastball ranks as the 13th best pitch at -9 Run Value and his cutter ranks 87th best at -5 Run Value.
  • His xwOBA against him is .266, 6th lowest among 121 pitches who have had a minimum of 100 BIP. Only two of the five ahead of him have more PA completed than Eduardo.
