Tyler Mattison Scouting Report
Background
Tyler Mattison is a 6-foot-4 pitcher who was taken in the 4th round of the 2021 draft out of Bryant University. The young righty caught fire in his senior season and was named conference pitcher of the year, resulting in the Tigers taking a shot at him early in the draft.
Fastball 55
Mattison has a fastball that sits in the low-to-mid-90s but at times has ticked up to the 96-97 range. He struggles to command it at times, but it plays well with his high arm slot and tailing action when he’s locating.
Cutter 45
Mattison scrapped his slider and relied on a cutter he developed in the 2022 Arizona Fall League that sits in the 85-86 range but has been a hittable pitch because of his downhill delivery. This is the least-thrown pitch in his arsenal.
Curveball 55
The curveball used to be Mattison’s primary breaking ball. It sat in the low 80s and played extremely well due to his ability to work north/south and throw from an elevated arm slot.
Changeup 55
Now seen as arguably his best pitch, the power changeup sits in the 85-86 range and is his strikeout pitch when he’s able to set it up with his fastball.
Command 40
The problem with Mattison through the first two years of his pro career has been command. He struggles to command his fastball specifically, but his good mechanics and frame give him the potential to throw more consistent strikes.
Overall
While Mattison doesn’t have a true plus pitch, his frame and funky arm slot could land him some innings at the big-league level soon. While he’s now just an inning-to-inning pitcher, I believe he can be stretched out into a long reliever at some point in his career.
