Hao-Yu Lee Scouting Report:
Background and Physical Description: Listed at 5’9, 190 pounds, Hao-Yu Lee was signed by the Phillies in 2021 from Taiwan. He has a stocky frame with muscular thighs and legs. The Tigers acquired Lee on August 1st for RHP Michael Lorenzen. Lee was named to the Class-A All-Star Team in the Florida State League after putting up a slash line of .283/.384/.415 in 302 plate appearances in 2022.
Hit – 45
Lee crowds the plate, has a closed stance with a slight bat wiggle before he swings. His swing has a slight uppercut and he tries to pull the ball, resulting in the occasional off-balance follow through. Lee controls the strike zone well, with a good eye at the plate.
Power -40
While Lee has fully grown into his body, there is projection to show more power at the higher levels because of his approach at the plate. He’s strong for his size, with some loft to his swing.
Run – 45
Lee isn’t going to clog the base paths as he shows a quick first step out of the box. Down the line in about 4.3 seconds from the right side of the plate. Gets good leads and has shown the ability to steal the occasional base, but he figures to lose a step as he climbs the ladder.
Defense – 40
Lee can play second, third, or short, but it appears his path to the majors is at second base, as his range works best there. He has focused on improving his footwork to put himself in better position. Above-average hands that can make the routine play.
Arm – 45
Lee flashes fringe-average arm strength and is on target with his throws with a quick release. The poor footwork in the past hampered Lee on throws, but it appears to be not the case as much in 2023. The arm is better suited for second base long term.
Overall
Lee is the type of player who leaves it out all there on the field. He’s a hard worker, as shown by his time in the Phillies complex improving his defense,, and he shows a no-fear approach at the plate. Despite a bat-first label, he’s solid enough on defense and the basepaths to carve out a role as a potential MLB regular, provided he can continue to progress in hitting for more power.
