Andrew Magno

Andrew Magno

Background and Physical Description:

Andrew Magno, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound pitcher from Dublin, Ohio, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 15th round of the 2019 MLB Draft from The Ohio State University. As the MVP of the 2019 Big Ten Tournament, Magno has demonstrated significant talent. Since joining Detroit, he has adapted to various roles in the bullpen, showcasing his versatility

Magno’s physique, characterized by a shorter frame and wide shoulders, complements his pitching style. In 2022, he distinguished himself by advancing through three levels. This season, he spent time in Toledo and Erie, where he accumulated 67 strikeouts in 51.1 innings, primarily serving as one of the team’s closers. His pitching technique is notable for its over-the-top hand motion and a high three-quarter arm slot, which he executes with consistent, repeatable mechanics. This approach not only adds a level of deception but also enhances his effectiveness on the mound.

Fastball-40

His fastball sits at 91-95 and has touched 96 a few times. Magno can spot the fastball inside on righties and can get weak contact when hitting the outside portion of the plate. The pitch has good, boring action in the inner half of the plate. Has to spot this pitch with accuracy in order to be effective.

Slider-50:

His slider sits around 82-86, which allows him to bury the pitch on the backfoot of righties based on the good, late life on the pitch. His best secondary pitch, as he can get good spin on the pitch. The pitch does lack consistency from time to time.

Curve-50:

Magno can spin his curve. The pitch has some big, looping action with good, late breaking action and, like his slider, can bury righties with it. The pitch sits 77-80 and with his repeatable mechanics, it catches righties off guard.

Overall:

Add Magno to the list of pitchers that Tigers fans could see come up in 2024. He has shown the ability to pitch in tough situations, but needs to cut his walks in order to see time in the majors this season. What helps he is, no matter if it’s lefties or righties, they batted under .200 against him in 2023. His work ethic and ability to jump into any situation makes him standout as a likely callup in 2024.
