Owen Hall

Owen Hall Scouting Report

(Check out our Bryce Rainer scouting report)

Background: Hall played his high school ball at Edmond North High School in Oklahoma, the same school that one time former Detroit Tigers right-hander Matt Roney played and the last player to be drafted out of North. Roney was the first Edmond North player to reach the majors when he made his debut for the Tigers on April 2, 2003.

Back to Hall, he impressed scouts during the Area Codes Games in August 2023 by striking out 10 of the 18 batters he faced with a fastball touching 97 MPH. In nine starts in his senior season, he posted an ERA of 1.65, striking out 75 and walking just 13. Hall did work out for Detroit before the draft, so the interest with Hall was strong from the beginning.

Owen Hall Physical Description:

Standing at 6’3, 185, Hall has broad shoulders along his lanky frame. There is room to add muscle and strength as he continues to mature. Throws at a mid 3/4 angle with a windup with his mid-leg rise and as he follows through, has a slight head wack, as he adjusts his cap each time after he throws.

Fastball: 55. Hall has touched 97 with the pitch, has good natural tail and sink. Can mix it on the top and bottom of the strike zone. It’s a live pitch with upper end velocity with good, riding action.

Slider: 50. Late life on the pitch with good velocity and good diving action on lefties. Draws swings and misses on the pitch.

Curveball: 45. Has 12-6 action on the pitch but can struggle to throw the pitch with consistency, where it looks like a “get me over” curve versus where it has shown at times to be a good swing and miss pitch when it drops off the table. It will need some fine-tuning, but it is a pitch with bite and depth to it.

Overall:

There is a lot to like with Hall, and it makes total sense why Detroit drafted him in the second round. The Tigers have been able to correct head wacks on several prospects (Wilmer Flores) and getting command issues under control. There is potential to be a second or third starter as he grows into his body. Plenty of swing and miss stuff between his fastball and slider.
