The Detroit Tigers have placed a premium on defense as a cornerstone of their rebuilding strategy, aligning with the vision of Manager A.J. Hinch and Scott Harris. Known for his preference to build teams with strong defensive fundamentals and position versatility, Hinch has set the tone for an adaptable and dynamic roster. This philosophy has filtered down through the Tigers’ minor league system, where defensive versatility is cultivated to maximize flexibility across the organization.
Before we start, originally, we had Gage Workman on this list, but with the recent Rule 5 draft, he is currently with the Chicago Cubs. However, it is worth noting his defensive prowess on the left side of the infield, which allow Trei Cruz to get time in the outfield in Erie.
Tigers Outfield:
Max Clark has lived up to his reputation as one of the most athletic defenders in the Tigers’ system. Playing center field, Clark covers ground with ease, showing exceptional speed and instincts, with a good closing speed on his approach to the ball. His strong arm and ability to make highlight-reel catches make him a future Gold Glove candidate.

Brett Callahan has emerged as a dependable defender in the outfield. His ability to track balls in the gaps and cover ground efficiently makes him a strong asset in the corner outfield spots. He also sports a cannon of an arm.

Brady Allen is another standout, thanks to his range and instincts in center field. His reads off the bat and ability to close gaps quickly make him a premium defender. His defense stood out after arriving in West Michigan in 2023, allowing Roberto Campos to develop more as a corner outfielder.
Honorable Mentions: Jackson Strong, Trei Cruz, Chris Meyers
Both Cruz and Meyers have made smooth transitions in the outfield with Meyers’s glove coming up huge in Erie’s second title run. Meyers went to the outfield after injuries to Jake Holton moved Austin Murr to first and Meyers to left. Strong has shown to have good combo of speed on approaching the ball in the outfield.

Tigers infield:
Hao-Yu Lee has shown exceptional defensive instincts at second base and third. His quick reactions, smooth hands, and ability to turn double plays under pressure make him one of the most reliable defenders in the system. While his arm accuracy at third was sometimes a struggle, that can be chalked up to learning a new position or rushing his throws. Lee’s footwork ensure he’s a steady presence in the infield.
Like Lee, Kevin McGonigle is known to be one of the best hitters in the Tigers system, but he is also a good infielder with the tools to shine defensively. His strong arm and excellent range make him a natural at both shortstop and second base. McGonigle’s ability to make plays in the hole and turn tough double plays adds to his value.

Trey Sweeney has been a defensive standout at shortstop since he arrived in Detroit. His range, smooth glove work, and ability to make off-balance throws have solidified his reputation as a reliable everyday shortstop prospect.

Tigers Catcher:
Thayron Liranzo is developing into one of the system’s best defensive catchers. He already possesses a strong arm but was working on his side to side motion to block better and improve his framing. He does have quick feet behind the dish, he just needs to put everything together consistently.
