TMLR Recap

It was another eventful night on the farm…for three of the Detroit Tigers affiliates. Toledo stretched their winning streak to seven games, Erie  blasted six homers, and West Michigan staged a late comeback. Check out the details below!

Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)

Final: Toledo 4, Worcester 2

Top Performers:

Brewer Hicklen: 2-for-4, BB, R, RBI, SB(9)

Manuel Margot (rehab): 1/3, RBI

Ryan Kreidler: 1/4, 2B, 2K, R, RBI

Brian Serven: 4/4, RBI

Pitchers:

Dietrich Enns: 5IP 4H 2R ER 2BB 5K

Andrew Chafin: IP H K

Tyler Owens: IP K

Game Notes:

The Mud Hens rode a 6-game winning streak into Worcester, but to keep that going they had to find a way to shut down, or outscore, the best offense in the International League. Dietrich Enns got the start, and he managed to quiet the fierce Red Sox bats for the first four innings of the game.

Meanwhile, the Hens batters staked Enns to an early 4-0 lead. The first run came just three batters into the game after Brewer Hicklen walked, stole 2nd, and came in to score on a single from the rehabbing Manuel Margot. Toledo plated three more runs in the 2nd behind a pair of walks, a Ryan Kreidler RBI double, and a 2-run single from Brian Serven. And that was all the Mud Hens needed.

The Woo Sox did plate two runs in the 5th inning on a Nate Eaton home run and a Connor Wong sacrifice fly. But the Hens bullpen managed to pitch around jams in the 6th and 7th to keep Worcester from scoring again. They stretchedx their winning streak to seven games, and improved to 12-16 on the season.

Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)

Final: Erie 13, Binghamton 3 (8 Innings)

Top Performers:

Trei Cruz: 2-for-5, HR(2) 2B, 2K, 2R, 2RBI

Max Anderson: 2-for-4, HR(5)

Jake Holton: 4-for-4, 2HR(6) 2B, 3R, 5RBI

Roberto Campos: 3-for-4, 2B, K, R, 2RBI

Jim Jarvis: 1/2, HR, 2BB, 2R

Pitchers:

Troy Melton: 4.2IP 8H 3R 2ER BB 5K

Troy Watson: 1.1 IP H

Yosber Sanchez: 2IP BB 2K

Game Notes: This one started out looking like a potential pitchers’ duel. Erie’s ace Troy Melton took the mound against Rumble Ponies starter Jack Wenniger, who came into the game with a 4-0 record, a 0.90 ERA, and 32 strikeouts in 20 innings. So, of course, we saw an offensive explosion.

The wind was blowing out at UPMC Park, and that certainly had something to do with the fireworks. But both teams also seemed locked in at the plate. Melton wasn’t at his best, and he had to work around traffic in every inning. He managed to get some key strikeouts and a clutch double play, but Binghamton eventually broke through in the 4th on a pair of singles and a passed ball from catcher Thayron Liranzo. And then Nick Lorusso hit a 2-run homer in the 5th to end Melton’s day.

It didn’t matter though. At least not in terms of an Erie win, because the SeaWolves batters went bonkers. Trei Cruz and Jake Holton both hit 2-run homers in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Wolves up 4-0. It was the beginning of a monster game for Holton. Binghamton did briefly make the game close. But then it was Holton again in the 5th, blasting a 3-run homer to make it a 7-3 game.

Erie went on to hit three more homers, with solo shots from Jim Jarvis (his first in Double-A) and the red-hot Max Anderson, and a 2-run blast from Eduardo Valencia. Roberto Campos tacked on two more runs with his first double at the Double-A level. Tony Watson and Yosber Sanchez pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief before rain ended the game slightly early.

West Michigan (High-A)

Final: Wisconsin 4, West Michigan 3

Top Performers:

Seth Stephenson: 2-for-5, HR(3) 2K, SB(10)

John Peck: 1-for-4, R, RBI

Izaac Pacheco: 2-for-4, HR, BB, K, 2RBI

Jack Penney: 1-for-2, 3BB

Pitchers:

Max Alba: 4 IP 6H 3ER BB 4K

Kenny Serwa: 3.2 IP H ER 2BB K

Trevin Michael: 1.1 IP 2K

Game Notes: The Whitecaps continued their two-week road trip with a trek to Wisconsin to take on the Timber Rattlers. They jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Seth Stephenson’s third home run of the year. But the Rattlers immediately jumped on West Michigan starter Max Alba, plating two runs on a trio of singles. It looked like the Caps might take the lead right back in the 2nd, after loading the bases with no outs. But Abel Bastidas and Bennett Lee both struck out, and Max Clark flew out to end the threat.

A Blake Burke homer made it 3-1 in the 4th inning, and it stayed that way until the 6th, when Izaac Pacheco crushed a game-tying 2-run homer, his first of the season. Knuckleballing sensation Kenny Serwa took over in the 5th inning, and he retired the first 8 batters he faced. But two walks and a single put the Ratters back up, 4-3.

It looked bleak for a bit, but Wisconsin had a disastrous 9th inning. Releiver Terlin Rodriguez couldn’t find the zone at all, walking Lee and Clark, before getting a called strike three on Stephenson. But then a wild pitch, an intentional walk to Josue Briceno, and an unintentional walk to John Peck made it a 4-4 tie. Then the wheels really fell off. An error by Wisconsin’s second baseman brought in two more runs, and another wild pitch made it 7-4. Trevin Michael got the final four outs of the game for the Whitecaps, and they improved to 15-7 on the season.

Lakeland (Low-A)

Final: Daytona 3, Lakeland 1

Top Performers:

Woody Hadeen: 2-for-3, HBP, SB(6)

Franyerber Montilla: 1-for-3, BB

Nomar Fana: 1-for-4, HR(2) K

Junior Tillien (rehab): 1-for-3, BB, 2K

Pitchers:

RJ Sales: 5IP 7H 2ER 2BB 3K

Chris Williams Jr.: IP H R 2K

Moises Rodriguez: IP H 2K

Game Notes: Daytona still lives in the Before Times. We had no video feed, and no Statcast data, so you’ll have to use your imagination, like a sucker. R.J. Sales got the start for Lakeland, and he got into a little trouble in the first inning, loading the bases with just one out. Then he rolled up a 6-4-3 double play that was probably spectacular and acrobatic. We’ll never know.

The Tortugas and Flying Tigers traded outs for the next few innings. Ricardo Hurtado continued to flash his arm strength by gunning down a Daytona runner at second base to end the 3rd inning. The Tortugas scratched across a runner in the 4th, but Nomar Fana immediately tied the game with a solo homer in the top of the 5th. Daytona retook the lead in the bottom of the frame, and then added a third in the 6th on a balk by Chris Williams Jr.

Lakeland put two on with one out in the 8th after singles from Bryce Rainer and Franyerber Montilla. But Rainer was caught trying to steal 3rd, and Carson Rucker flew out to end the threat. The Flying Tigers fall to 10-12 on the season.
