Akil Baddoo

Akil Baddoo is back in a Tigers uniform, recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take the roster spot of Jace Jung, who was optioned back down after a brief stint in the majors. And this time, the path back to Detroit feels more earned than circumstantial.

Following a frustrating 2024 season that ended with a .137 batting average and a trip through waivers, Baddoo was outrighted to Toledo. The power was gone, the confidence looked shaken, and his roster spot evaporated. But after starting the 2025 season recovering from a hamate bone injury, Baddoo has returned not only healthy but showing some power.

In 102 at-bats with the Mud Hens this year, Baddoo hit .245 with a .336 OBP and an .807 OPS. He added 7 home runs, 15 RBI, and 6 stolen bases, solid production that reflects both power and versatility. What stands out is five of those home runs came this month. But it’s the quality of contact beneath the surface that’s most encouraging.

In Toledo, Baddoo launched five of those home runs with exit velocities averaging over 106 mph, including a 111.5 mph rocket off a slider. His average launch angle has climbed from 19.2° in 2024 to over 21° this season, suggesting a more aggressive flyball approach. His median and 95th percentile exit velocities are up, too, signaling more consistent and impactful contact.

This is not the same version of Baddoo fans may of have seen last year. He’s squaring up pitches more often and handling both fastballs and offspeed offerings better

Defensively, Baddoo provides depth in both left and center field, which gives manager A.J. Hinch flexibility as the Tigers navigate injuries and pending roster moves.

Hinch noted this week on 97.1 The Ticket that Matt Vierling is close to returning and will see time in center, right, and third base, possibly starting at third for a rehab game in Toledo. Parker Meadows is also slated to begin a rehab assignment soon.

With that looming outfield logjam, Baddoo has a limited window to show he belongs. But if he continues to carry over his swing changes and delivers in limited opportunities, there’s a path to staying on the big-league roster.

Baddoo has consistently offered speed and defensive versatility, but recent metrics indicate a tangible uptick in power output. His long-term role remains uncertain, yet there is data to suggest measurable progress in his offensive profile.
