Tigers Minor League Recap

Soggy Midwest weather spoiled a pair of games for Tigers affiliates on Tuesday evening, but we did get plenty of action. That includes a shutout, a blowout, and one epic comeback in Florida. Read all about it below!

Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)

Final: PPD Rain

Game Notes: I think most people take it for granted that water, the thing humans need most to live*, literally falls from the sky for us. Rain is terrific for hydration and such, but it’s a real bummer for baseball. Particularly when we were set to see Parker Meadows in his first rehab action of the season. The game is scheduled to be made up on Thursday.

*”What about oxygen” you ask? I said what we need to LIVE, not what we need to survive. Let me know the next time you take a shower in oxygen, you savage.

Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)

Final: Erie 5, Hartford 0

Top Performers:

Trei Cruz: 2-for-3, 2 2B, BB

Max Anderson: 1-for-4, SB

Thayron Liranzo: 1-for-3, K, R

Carlos Mendoza: 2-for-4, 2B, 2R, RBI

Justice Bigbie: 2-for-4, RBI

Pitchers:

Carlos Pena: 5IP 3H BB 5K

Jordan Marks: 2IP H BB 2K

R.J. Petit: 2IP H BB 2K

Game Notes: The Erie SeaWolves own the best team ERA in the Eastern League, by a decent margin, and their pitching was masterful again on Tuesday. Carlos Pena set the tone, keeping the Yard Goats off balance over five scoreless innings. Andrew Magno and RJ Petit picked up where Pena left off, tossing four more scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. It’s the 8th shutout tossed by Erie this year, and it led to a very fast game that ended in exactly two hours.

The offense was solid, too. The first run scored when Roberto Campos walked in the 2nd inning, stole second, and came home on an Eduardo Valencia double. Two more came across in the 3rd on a two-out double from Carlos Mendoza, and Justice Bigbie single to bring him home. The Wolves tacked on another run in the 7th on an Eliezer Alfonzo single, and then manufactured a run in the 8th to produce the final score.

West Michigan (High-A)

Final: PPD Rain

Game Notes: We’ve heard a lot of hippie talk about rain being important and life-giving and all that nonsense. But if water is so great, why don’t they play baseball in pools? Think about it. Anyway, the same storm that ruined Parker Meadows’ return to action also spoiled the return of Josue Briceno and Kevin McGonigle. Bummer.

Lakeland (Low-A)

Final: Lakeland 13, Fort Myers 3

Top Performers:

Woody Hadeen: 1-for-4, K, 2R, 2SB(11)

Bryce Rainer: 1-for-3, BB, 2R, 3SB(7)

Jackson Strong: 1-for-4, 3B, 2R, 2RBI

Garrett Pennington: 2-for-5, 2 2B, K, 2R

Pitchers:

Hayden Minton: 4.2IP 8H 2ER 2BB K

Duque Hebbert: 2.1 IP 2H 3K

Ryan Harvey: 1 IP

Ignacio Briceno: IP H K

Game Notes: The Flying Tigers sprinted out to a big lead, both literally and figuratively, and then coasted to a comfortable win. Lakeland sent nine batters to the plate in the 1st and stole three bases on the way to a four-run frame. The 2nd inning saw more of the same, with 10 batters coming to the plate, three steals, and five runs on the board. Jackson Strong ripped a 2-run triple early, and David Smith added a 2-run single later to make it a 9-1 game.

Lakeland Starter Hayden Minton wasn’t his sharpest, although the defense didn’t do him many favors. And those long innings probably didn’t help much, either. But it was still a pretty easy win. The Flygers tacked on another run in the 4th on a Cristian Santana double, and then they plated three more on a Franyerber Montilla double in the 7th. The Lakeland bullpen did the rest, with Duque Hebbert doing strong work, and the Flying Tigers improved to 22-17 on the year.

FCL Tigers (Florida Complex League)

Final: Tigers 10, Yankees 9

Top Performers:

Jesus Pinto: 1-for-4, 2BB, K, R, 2RBI

Jude Warwick: 1-for-4, K, 2R, SB(5)

Jose Dickson: 1-for-4, HR(2) 3RBI

Javier Osorio: 2-for-3, HR(3), 2BB, K, 2R, SB(5)

Anibal Salas: 1-for-2, 2BB, K, SB

Pitchers:

Wuilberth Mendez: 3.1 IP 7H 5R 4ER 0BB K

Dawson Price: 1.1 IP H BB K

Omari Daniel: 2IP 3H ER

Game Notes: This was a Complex League special, featuring 24 hits, 11 walks, 4 errors, 4 hit batters, 3 wild pitches, and a balk. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, but the Yankees plated five runs over the next three innings. Wuilberth Mendez kept pounding the strike zone, but he couldn’t miss bats and the ball kept finding grass. The Yankees took a 5-1 lead, though Jose Dickson closed it to 5-3 with his second homer of the season.

The Yankees kept at it, though, and were up 8-3 after five innings. But then the game flipped on its head. The Tigers scored six times in the top of the 6th, as the first five batters all reached via two singles, a walk, and two hit batters. All those runners came around to score, and then Javier Osorio topped off the 6-run rally with an inside-the-park home run.

The FCL Tigers scratched across one more run in the top of the 9th to make it a 10-8 game, and that insurance proved to be crucial. The Yankees scored one run in the bottom of the frame on a single by Luis Escudero. But he tried to push it to a double, and Anibal Salas gunned him out at 2nd to end the game. The FCL Tigers move to 9-4 on the season.
