Toledo Mud Hens

Toledo Mud Hens Live Look

Our contributor Ashley Couturier took a trip down to Toledo to check in on the Mud Hens on Friday, May 23rd. Here’s what she saw:

Gage Workman, SS

Gage Workman is a 6-foot-4, 202 pound shortstop who looks strong and athletic. Defensively he moved well, made the routine plays, and was on target with his throws with good arm strength. He was able to throw out the good runners. As far as his swing, he displays a balanced setup, a quick load, and a short swing.

Performance wise, Workman went 2-for-4 with two singles and a strikeout. He showed impressive exit velocities on his hits, at 107.2 and 102 MPH.

Wilkel Hernandez, RHP

Wilkel Hernandez is 6-foot-3, 195 pound, medium-bodied but athletic starting pitcher. He has long arm action with slight hook in his arm path. Hernandez stays behind on top of his arm path out front, and has an easy, on-line delivery with a high leg kick to a 3/4 arm slot.

He sat at 93 MPH with his sinker, which he used most frequently, and reached back for 95 when needed. Hernandez was durable and maintained his velocity through the fifth inning, and when pitching from the stretch. His slider had good tilt and depth when he stayed on top of the ball.

Hernandez posted a final line of: 5.1 IP, 3H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2K.

Ryan Miller, RHP

Ryan Miller is a 6-foot, 180 pound, medium-bodied reliever. He is mostly a sinker/slider guy with a show-me changeup he will throw for an occasional arm-side strike. His upshoot sinker sat 91 MPH with good arm-side run, and slider sat 86 MPH with good feel to spin and tilt.

His final line was: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.
