Scouting Detroit Tigers 2025 Draft Class

As high school and college baseball seasons wrap up and the draft quickly approaches, we still don’t have a clear picture of how the draft order will shake out. Upon additional research and looks at guys in high leverage playoff situations, I thought a “From Tools to Tigers 2.0” article was necessary to take a look at some names I may have left off the first time around.

For context, you can read part one of the article here. I studied the Tigers’ draft trends over the last two years since Mark Conner came over as Scouting Director from the San Diego Padres and tried matching up draft prospects that look like possible fits for us. The Tigers pick 24th this year, have a comp pick at #34 in the first round, then pick 62nd in the second round.

Cam Cannarella

Draft Age: 21

School/Commit: Clemson

Position: OF

Bat/Throw: L/R

Height/Weight: 6’0”, 185

Cam Cannarella is a toolsy left-handed center fielder with great bat-to-ball skills. His hit tool grades as plus, he has a plus run tool, and double plus defense. The only pain point with Cannarella is injury, as he suffered a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder that needed surgery in July 2024. His arm strength was graded at 40 (below average) before his injury, and questions about his power in the future loom. His power may end up being below average, manifesting in the form of doubles and line drives instead of over-the-fence juice.

Kruz Schoolcraft

Draft Age: 18

School/Commit: Sunset (OR)/Tennessee

Position: LHP

Bat/Throw: L/L

Height/Weight: 6’8”/229

Kruz Schoolcraft stood out to scouts as a two-way player (LHP and 1B) but ultimately stands out on the mound after putting up impressive numbers in the summer of 2024 and at the Area Code Games – a 1.80 ERA and a 14.40 K/9 in 15 IP. Schoolcraft is a long-limbed kid who still has projection left. His delivery features a leg kick with a long arm path back into a ¾ arm slot with easy arm speed and excellent extension due to his XL frame and an on-line delivery. He touches 98 with ease with his fastball. He spins his breaking pitches well, one tighter with slight sweep and has recently flashed a low 70s breaker with 1-7 downer action. His changeup has fade and late diving action. He throws strikes, repeats his delivery, and locates his pitches well.

Josh Hammond

Draft Age: 18

School/Commit: Wesleyan Christian (NC)/Wake Forest

Position: 3B

Bat/Throw: R/R

Height/Weight: 6’1”/210

Josh Hammond got scouts’ attention at the Prep Baseball Report All-American game back in 2023. He is a power-over-hit profile but has shown better swing decisions recently. His raw power grades as plus, he is an average runner and defender and flashes a 65 arm at the hot corner. Through 119 PA in 2025 at Wesleyan Christian High School, he is slashing .471/.613/.882 with 11 doubles and 6 HR. He has walked 24% of the time and struck out only 7% of the time.

Briggs Mckenzie

Draft Age: 18

School/Commit: Corinth Holders (NC)/Louisiana State University

Position: LHP

Bat/Throw: L/L

Height/Weight: 6’2”/190

Briggs Mckenzie is a left-handed pitcher whose fastball grades as average, change grades as average, and curveball grades as plus with lots of late 12-6 downer action. He features a high leg kick with long arm action into a ¾ arm slot, and an easy, loose on-line delivery. He doesn’t hold velocity deep into games, but his slender, projectable frame may be able to add muscle and get stronger. His control and command grade as average but could use some fine-tuning. In 2024 over the summer, he posted a 1.17 ERA and a 12.52 K/9, 1.56 BB/9 in 23 IP.

Luke Stevenson

Draft Age: 20

School/Commit: University of North Carolina

Position: C

Bat/Throw: L/R

Height/Weight: 6’1”/200

Stevenson is a left-handed catcher with a fringe hit tool, above-average power, well-below average run, but a plus arm and defense behind the plate whose throws are right on the money. He is currently slashing .254/.420/.561 at UNC with 9 doubles and 18 HR through 270 plate appearances, striking out 24% of the time and walking 21% of the time – his average has dropped about 30 points since last year as his slug and K rates have gone up – however his walk rates have gone up as well since his 2024 season. His IZ miss % is below average against offspeed pitches and average against fastballs 92+, and his chase rates look good.

Alex Lodise

Draft Age: 21

School/Commit: Florida State University

Position: SS

Bat/Throw: R/R

Height/Weight: 6’1”/190

Lodise is a right-handed up-the-middle athlete at Florida State. He is an above-average runner with average grades on the rest of his tools. He has added strength and since shown power to all fields. Lodise has showcased his ability to perform well at a power 4 school at a premium position, thus putting him into top 50 conversations in the 2025 draft. So far during the 2025 season at Florida State (through 270 PA), he is slashing .405/.473/.736 with 18 doubles and 17 home runs.

His K rate is 19%, and he walks 10% of the time. All his numbers have improved exponentially from his 2024 season, especially his ISO going from .189 to .330, and his K rate going down from 25% to 18%. Lodise does chase a lot – upwards of 34% on fastballs, offspeed, and breaking, however his in-zone miss rates are all below 20% (average for NCAA).
