Tigers Minor League Recap – 6/11

Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)

Final: Omaha 6 – Toledo 1

Top Performer(s):

Justyn-Henry Malloy, RF — 1-for-3, RBI, 1 BB
Akil Baddoo, LF — 1-for-4, 2B, R
Brian Serven, C — 1-for-3

Tyler Owens — 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. 2 of his last 3 outings had been rough, so it was really nice to see him come out and get a shutdown outing. He allowed no base runners and strike out 3 of the 5 he faced.

Game notes:

Offense was very anemic tonight for the Mud Hens. Scoring just 1 run in the 1st on a single from Justyn-Henry Malloy that scored Akil Baddoo from 2nd base after he had the only XBH for the Mud Hens tonight.

Alex Cobb had a rehab start getting 2.0 IP where he had 3 BBs and 2 Ks allowing 1 ER. Matt Manning had another good relief outing facing the minimum in his 1.0 IP, getting 2 Ks. Troy Melton came in to get the bulk of the innings in between Manning and Owens. He allowed 5 ER and 1 HR while striking out 7. It was his second straight outing getting 7 Ks and was slightly shorter than his first by 0.1 IP, but gave up tons more runs this go around.

Tomorrow’s projected starters:

Dietrich Enns (2-1, 2.70 ERA) vs Thomas Hatch (2-3, 4.59 ERA)

Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)

Final: Altoona 2 – Erie 5

Top Performer(s):

Trei Cruz, SS — 1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 SB
Max Anderson, 2B — 1-for-4, 3B, R, RBI
Thayron Liranzo, DH — 1-for-4, 2 RBI

Kenny Serwa — 6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Altoona for the Serwa early scoring 2 runs in the 2nd inning. He then allowed just 3 base runners in his next 4 IP.

Game Notes:

Erie had an eventful 6th inning where they had all 9 batters come up to the plate and they scored 4 of their 6 runs. Trei Cruz was the first to get on in the inning by getting a walk. He would soon steal his second base of the game and would score on the Max Anderson triple. Thayron Liranzo, Justice Bigbie, and Roberto Campos would also drive in runs that inning.

Kenny Serwa had his best AA start of his brief career and the second time he’s reached 6.0 IP. Matt Seelinger got his first save on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.26 across AA and AAA.

Tomorrow’s projected starters:

Game 1: Jaden Hamm (1-2, 4.44 ERA) vs TBD

West Michigan Whitecaps (High-A)

Final: Lansing 4 – West Michigan 3,

Top Performer(s):

Ben Malgeri, RF — 3-for-3, HR, R, 2 RBI
John Peck, DH — 1-for-3, 2B, R, RBI
Kevin McGonigle, SS — 1-for-3, 2B, R, BB

Max Alba — 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Max Alba has his 6th straight 4+ IP and 2 or fewer ER. He got himself into a little bit of trouble, but escaped and made to a qualifying start.

Game Notes:

The Whitecaps looked as if they’d have another high scoring game scoring 3 runs on 3 hits in the 1st inning. Unfortunately that was all they could get in tonight.

Max Alba held Lansing to 0 runs until the 5th inning came. After a fantastic catch by Max Clark, a one out single followed by a HBP had two on. Max got a pop up and looked like he might be able to get out of the jam once again, but an error by Ben Malgeri allowed 2 runs to score.

CJ Weins gave the Whitecaps 2 innings of relief allowing just 2 singles and striking out 3. It looked like it could get sketchy for him in the 6th after and error from Luke Gold allowed 2 men on and just 1 out, but he escaped.

With the game still on the line, Micah Ashman came in the 8th to shut it down. He was able to get a 1-2-3 8th, but the 9th was a very different story. He hit one batter, had a throwing error on a bunt, and allowed 2 runs to score as Lansing walks off and steals the win.

Tomorrow’s projected starters:

Andrew Sears (3-2, 3.24 ERA) vs Steven Echavarria (2-2, 4.15 ERA)

Lakeland Flying Tigers (Single-A)

Final: Palm Beach 7 – Lakeland 6 F/10

Top Performer(s):

Jackson Strong, CF — 2-for-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI
Franyerber Montilla, SS — 1-for-4, R, RBI, BB
Ricardo Hurtado, C — 1-for-4, HR, R, RBI

Luke Stofel — 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Luke’s night was as not as bad as it might have seemed. Unfortunately for him, Samuel Gil committed 3 different errors and runs came across to score. The lone ER came on a Deniel Ortiz HR in the bottom of the 3rd.

Game Notes:

The game looked like it could get out of hand quickly tonight. Palm Beach scored 2 in the 1st and 1 in each of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th to get out to a 5-1 lead. Then the 7th came along and the Flying Tigers scored 5 runs capped off by a bases clearing double from Jackson Strong. The Flying Tigers couldn’t quite hold on though. A double from Deniel Ortiz in the 9th tied the game up and then a single from Sammy Hernandez in the 10th walks the game off.
