Tigers Minor League Recap

Tigers Minor League Recap – 6/25

Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)

Final: Charlotte 4 – Toledo 3 F/10

Top Performer(s):

Jace Jung, 2B — 2-for-4, RBI, BB, CS
Gage Workman, 3B-CF — 1-for-2, 2B, RBI, R, BB
Ryan Kreidler, SS — 2-for-5, 2B, R

Beau Brieske — 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. Beau had a really good outing today. More specifically, I want to point that his 4-Seam and Sinker both averaged 97.2 MPH, which is 1.5 MPH faster than both were averaging with the Tigers this year. His max 98.0 MPH 4-seam would have been the second highest he’d thrown all year.

Game notes:

Today was a game of 2s. All 3 Mud Hen runs were scored on doubles, Gage Workman and Riley Unroe doubled in runs in the 6th and then Jace Jung doubled in a run in the 10th to bring them closer to tying the game back up. Charlotte scored 2 runs in the 1st to take the early lead and then 2 runs in the 10th to re-take the lead and eventually win. The Mud Hens also could have had 2 runs in the 10th, but Jace was thrown out at home by Zach DeLoach.

Mud Hens offense took a little bit to get some runs across the board, being shutout until they scored 2 in the 6th inning. But it wasn’t from the lack of trying. They had 4 hard hit outs in the first 5 innings today. Jace was able to get 3 hard hit balls, which led the team.

Today was a rehab start for Reese Olson. Threw 74 pitches in 4.0 IP, gave up 2 ER, struck out 5. More importantly, he threw 14 changeups, which had been an issue. I’d assume that he would be up before long.

The bullpen was able to shut down Charlotte for the next 5 innings until a Brooks Baldwin 2-run HR in the top of the 10th off of Ryan Miller.

Tomorrow’s projected starters:

Keider Montero (1-2, 4.91 ERA) vs Mike Clevinger (2-2, 4.01 ERA)

Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)

Final: Somerset 3 – Erie 9

Top Performer(s):

Justice Bigbie, RF — 3-for-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Max Anderson, 2B — 2-for-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI
Thayron Liranzo, DH — 0-for-1, RBI, 2 BB

Garrett Burhenn — 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Garrett has earned his 8th win on the season. He’s now got 5 IP in 3 straight games and at least 5 IP in 9 of 13 starts.

Game Notes:

Erie scored runs in groups once again getting 4 in the 2nd, 3 in the 5th, 2 in the 9th. 7 of the 9 starters drove in a run with Max Anderson and Justice Bigbie each driving in 2. No HRs tonight, but they were able to 5 doubles to help with their scoring. Their smart swing decisions as whole came into play as they drew 10 BBs and struck out only 8 times.

The 4 runs in the 2nd would be all the Seawolves would need to get the win as the pitchers only gave up 3 with 2 of those runs coming on solo shots by Omar Martinez in the 5th and Spencer Jones in the 8th. They also struck out 6 of the 9 batters. RJ Petit and Jordan Marks each got 2 IP. Jordan Marks broke his 7 game streak of no runs allowed when he gave up the solo HR to Jones which rose his ERA to 1.50 on the season.

Tomorrow’s projected starters:

Game 1: Austin Bergner (5-3, 3.43 ERA) vs Brock Selvidge (1-1, 3.55 ERA)

West Michigan Whitecaps (High-A)

Final: Lake County 6  – West Michigan 9

Top Performer(s):

Kevin McGonigle, DH — 2-for-4, HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB
Seth Stephenson, CF — 1-for-4, 2 R, BB, SB
Patrick Lee, RF — 2-for-4, R, RBI, SB

Andrew Sears — 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Sears came in the 3rd inning and went the longest of any of the pitchers. He was able to get 5 Ks on 51 pitches. He had a bumpy 4th inning giving up 2 singles and a walk, which loaded the bases, and then allowed his only run on a sac fly.

Game Notes:

The Whitecaps offense feels unstoppable. They have scored 9+ runs in 15 of their 70 games played. That’s 1 in every 4.7 games played.

Also unstoppable is Kevin McGonigle who has played in 33 game this year and been on-base 2+ times in 21 times, including today’s game. That’s 1 in every 1.6 games played. Today he had a single, HR, and a BB. Joining in in the on-base 2+ times club today was Seth Stephenson and Patrick Lee.

They scored 5 runs in the 3rd. Started with Peyton Graham leading off the inning with a triple and Patrick Lee driving him in the next batted. After he steals second, the White Caps had a HBP-BB-BB to score their second run. An error scored the 3rd run and a double from Izaac Pacheco would score 2 more. This would give them the 5-1 lead early in the game. After the McGonigle HR in the 6th, Lake County would decide to not go down easily scoring 3 runs in the 6th off the Tyler Mattison from a triple, single, double combination. A couple of strikeouts later, Alfonsin Rosario would drive in the third run and end Mattison’s day. Then in the 7th, they’d get a solo shot from Wilfredo Antunez, his only hit of the day, to tie it up 6-6.

West Michigan would regain the lead in the 9th thanks to a 2-run single from McGonigle (again!) and an eventual single from John Peck, who would get thrown out trying for second to end the inning.

It was a bullpen game today for the Whitecaps. Lots of guys rehabbing and getting an inning or two. Jordan Balazovic would get the start followed by Sean Guenther. As I mentioned, Tyler Mattison didn’t have his best stuff giving up 3 runs — but he did get 2 Ks in his 0.2 innings of work. Haden Erbe would get 4 Ks in his 1.1 IP after giving up the run that tied the game and CJ Weins would get the win finishing out the game.

Tomorrow’s projected starters:

Rayner Castillo (2-3, 4.83 ERA) vs Michael Kennedy (1-0, 3.38 ERA)

Lakeland Flying Tigers (Single-A)

Final: Clearwater 1 – Lakeland 7

Top Performer(s):

Woody Hadeen, SS — 2-for-5, R, 2 SB
Franyerber Montilla, 2B — 1-for-3, 2B, 2 BB, R, SB
Sergio Tapia, C — 3-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Luke Stofel — 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Luke has quietly had a good season. It’s his 5th start in a row after pitching from the bullpen and it’s the 3rd time he’s gone at least 5 innings in those starts. He had just 3 whiffs tonight, but the 15 called strikes helped him out tons. His fastball touched 96 (95.7, technically).

Game Notes:

Lakeland spread their scoring out. They scored 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, 2 in the 6th, 1 in each of the 7th and 8th. Abel Bastidas got the scoring started with a single to score Sergio Tapia in that 2nd inning. Garrett Pennington drove one in the 3rd and the one in the 8th.

Sergio Tapia has his 3rd straight multi-hit game and has had a HR in 2 of the 3 games despite getting only 1 game every 5 days.

Pitching was excellent tonight. The staff as a whole let just 5 base runners and only one of them was an extra base hit. Tanner Kohlhepp, Thomas Szapucki, and Ryan Harvey each got an inning in relief behind Luke Stofel. Combined they had 2 Ks in 3 IP.
