It was a nearly perfect day on the Detroit Tigers farm, with long-anticipated debuts and big-time offensive performances. Check out the details below!
Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)
Final: Toledo 12, Omaha 8
Top Performers:Â
Hao-Yu Lee: 2-for-6, 2 2B, 2K, R
Andy Ibanez: 3-for-5, HR(2), BB, 2R, 2RBI
Jace Jung: 3-for-5, HR(9), 2B, BB, 2K, 2RBI
Trei Cruz: 2-for-5, 3B, 2B, K, 2R
Eduardo Valencia: 2-for-4, HR(12), BB, K, 2R, 2RBi
Pitchers:
Wilkel Hernandez: 5IP H ER 2BB 4K (W, 3-4)
Tyler Owens: IP H ER 3BB 2K
Beau Brieske: 0.1 IP 2H 5ER 3BB 2HR
Matt Seelinger: 1.2IP H ER BB, 3K
Game Notes:Â The Toledo Mud Hens do not respect their elders. The Storm Chasers sent 45-year-old Rich Hill to the mound in this one, and it didn’t take long for the Hens to chase him. Jace Jung launched a 2-out, 2-run homer in the 1st, and that was just the beginning. The floodgates opened in the 2nd inning. Eduardo Valencia crushed a 2-run homer of his own in his first Triple-A at-bat. Three batters later it was a 2-run blast from Andy Ibanez. A bases loaded walk to Brewer Hicklen made it 7-0, and the rout was on. Meanwhile Wilkel Hernandez generally cruised through five innings, allowing just one run on a solo homer by catching prospect Carter Jensen.
Hill managed to keep the score 7-0 for a few more innings, but then Tomas Nido hit a 2-run homer in the 5th off Brandon Johnson to make it 9-0. The team’s traded a few more runs over the next two innings, with Trei Cruz picking up a triple for his first career Triple-A hit. It was a 10-2 Toledo lead when Beau Brieske had a disastrous 7th inning. He he retired just one batter, gave up two home runs, and issued three walks before leaving with an apparent injury. Matt Seelinger allowed the two inherited runners to score, and suddenly it was a 10-8 game. But the Hens were able to tack on two more runs against old friend Michael Fulmer, and that produced the final score. Toledo moves to 46-42 on the season, and 7-6 in the 2nd half.

Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)
Final: Erie 4, Harrisburg 1
Top Performers:
Max Clark:Â 1-for-4, K
Thayron Liranzo:Â 1-for-3, BB, R
Kevin McGonigle: 1-for-4
Max Anderson: 1-for-4, R, RBI
Josue Briceño: 2-for-4, 2B, K, R, RBI
Justice Bigbie:Â 1-for-2, HR(8), 2BB, 2RBI
Pitchers:
Garrett Burhenn: 5IP 3H ER BB 3K (W, 9-2)
Tyler Mattison: 2IP H BB K
Trevin Michael: IP H 2K
Richard Guasch: IP H 2K
Game Notes:Â Tuesday marked the highly anticipated Double-A debut of three of the top Detroit Tigers prospects. They didn’t disappoint, but for a moment it looked like Harrisburg might spoil their party. The Senators took a 1-0 lead just three batters into the game behind a pair of singles and a ground out. They were threatening more runs, but Garrett Burhenn struck out the next two batters to end the inning. That was all the damage he and the SeaWolves allowed for the rest of the game.
And then, three batters into the 2nd inning, Erie took the lead away for good. It began with Josue Briceno picking up his first Double-A hit, and then Justice Bigbie smashed a 2-run oppo homer. Max Clark got into the action with his first Double-A hit in the 3rd inning, though he was thrown out after oversliding third base on a Thayron Liranzo excuse-me check-swing single. Clark did manage to get into a pickle, which helped Liranzo move up to 2nd base. That proved valuable when Max Anderson singled and Liranzo scored to make it a 3-1 SeaWolves lead. Briceno followed by smashing an RBI double to deep center. That was it for the scoring.
In the 5th inning Kevin McGonigle picked up his first knock for Erie, but that ended up being the team’s last hit of the game. Erie’s bullpen was excellent once again, with Tyler Mattison, Trevin Michael, and Richard Guasch combining for five strikeouts over four scoreless innings of relief.

West Michigan (High-A)
Final: West Michigan 5, Lake County 4
Top Performers:
John Peck: 2-for-4, 2 2B, K, 2R
Izaac Pacheco: 1-for-3, 2B, BB, 2R, RBI
Garrett Pennington: 2-for-4, K, R, 2RBI
Pitchers:
Rayner Castillo: 4IP 6H 3ER BB 2K
Carlos Lequerica: 2IP BB 3K
Freddy Pacheco (rehab): IP BB K
Game Notes:Â Losing three of the best hitting prospects in baseball isn’t great for your offense. But West Michigan still has plenty of talented bats, and they got a couple of interesting reinforcements of their own from Lakeland. The Whitecaps got into a bit of a hole early as the first two Captains hitters singled off Rayner Castillo. But Castillo was able to get out of the inning without further damage, and the West Michigan offense went to work.
John Peck and Izaac Pacheco both came through with 2-out doubles to tie the game. And then Garrett Pennington picked up an RBI knock in his first High-A at-bat. Lake County retook the lead with a pair of solo homers in the 3rd, but then the Killer P’s struck again. Peck picked up his second double of the game. Pacheco’s patience paid off with a walk. And then Pennington poked an RBI single to center. The Caps scored twice more in the inning on an Andrew Jenkins ground out and a wild pitch. Then the bullpen went to work.
Carlos Lequerica was terrific once again. Freddy Pacheco fired off a scoreless inning. And Colin Fields gave up a run, but got some help from his defense when it matter the most. Blair Calvo put the first two men on in the 9th, but he managed to wriggle out of that jam to pick up the save.

Lakeland (Low-A)
Final: Lakeland 10, Fort Myers 5
Top Performers:
Franyerber Montilla:Â 3-for-4, 3B, 2 2B, BB, K, 3R, RBI
Carlos Santana: 1-for-4, HR(11), K, 3RBI
Zach MacDonald: 1-for-3, HR, BB, K, 3RBI
Pitchers:
Zack Lee: 5IP 6H 3ER 2BB
Ronny Chalas: 2IP H 2BB K
Game Notes: The Lakeland Flying Tigers have won 12 games in a row. We should probably be talking about this more…but they’ve already secured a playoff spot, and there are lots of other fun things happening in the system. Also there are no cameras on the Tampa backfields. Stupid natural disasters.
Lakeland jumped out to an early lead after a 2-out double from Franyerber Montilla and a single from Stephen Hrustich. They bumped it to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd when Zach MacDonald launched a 3-run blast for his first professional home run. The lead swelled to 5-0 in the 3rd after doubles from Montilla and Ricardo Hurtado. A Montilla triple made it 6-0, and then Cristian Santana put it out of reach with a 3-run homer of his own.
Zack Lee managed to keep the Tampa bats in check despite failing to register a strikeout. The Tarpons made it interesting with a pair of triples and a home run in the 9th, but the deficit was too big to overcome. Lakeland moves to 50-28 on the season.
Tigers Rookie Ball Roundup
It was very nearly a perfect day in the rookie ball world, with a pair of blowouts. But the pesky DSL Cubs Red squad had to ruin it with a walk-off win.
FCL Tigers
Final:Â Tigers 10, Phillies 4
Game Notes:Â The Tigers made a habit of scoring in pairs in this one, plating two runs apiece in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. That was more than enough run support for starter Wuilberth Mendez, who tossed five scoreless frames. Jose Dickson had an excellent day, going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and his 7th stolen base of the season. He brought home the first three runs of the game, beginning with a double in the 1st and then a single in the 3rd. Rehabbing outfielder David Smith also got into the action, blasting a 2-run homer in the 4th. Shay Timmer and Omari Daniel both tossed a scoreless inning of relief before Xiomer Guacache ran into some trouble in the 9th. It wasn’t nearly enough for the Phillies, though, and the Tigers moved to 31-17 on the season.

DSL Tigers1
Final: Cubs Red 5, Tigers 4 (7 innings)
Game Notes:Â The Cubs jumped out to an early lead in this one, plating three 1st-inning runs off lanky Tigers starter Andres Ortiz. But Ortiz settled down after that, tossing three more scoreless frames. That allowed the Tigers to come all the way back. They scored twice in the 3rd on singles from first baseman Fabian Dorta and second baseman Guillermo Batista. The Tigers tied it at 3 in the 6th after pinch-hitter Jeiker Gudino hit his first career home run. And then they took the lead on a 2-out knock from Cristian Perez. The Tigers were one out away from the win, but then Luis Abreu singled and Luis Leon hit s 2-run, walk-off homer.
DSL Tigers2
Final: Tigers 13, Yankees 1 (7 innings)
Game Notes:Â This one was a fairly close affair for half the game. The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead on a Carlos Benavides ground out and a double steal and an error. The Yankees plated a run in the 2nd, but the Tigers did the same, on another double steal, to make it 3-1. And then the wheels fell off for the Yankees. Nelson Marin brought home two more runs in the 4th to make it 5-1. The Tigers added three more runs in the 5th, punctuated by Nestor Miranda’s 4th home run of the season. And then it was a 5-run 6th, with a two-run single from Benavides and Cris Rodriguez’s 4th homer of the year.
