Tigers Minor League Recap – 7/9
Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)
Final: Omaha 13 – Toledo 7
Top Performer(s):
Jace Jung, 3B — 4-for-5, 2B, RBI
Akil Baddoo, LF — 2-for-5, HR, R, 2 RBI
Hao-Yu Lee, 2B — 1-for-5, 2 R
PJ Poulin — 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. PJ had a good night. And it was even better compared to the other pitchers in the game tonight. He allowed no base runners and faced the minimum hitters in his 1 IP, getting all 3 batters out via a strikeout.
Game notes:
What a ride this game was. It started with a Justyn-Henry Malloy double to drive in Hao-Yu Lee in the first. A good way to start the game. The Mud Hens pitchers would then give up 8 in innings 1-4 to Omaha before scoring 2 in the top of the 5th off an Akil Baddoo 2-run HR. Omaha would then scored 2 runs in each of the 5th and 6th inning to take a comfortable 12-3 lead. Still having some fight in them, the Mud Hens would put up a 3 run 7th playing small ball. They collected 2 HBP and 4 singles in this inning to help fuel the runs. 1 run was scored on a wild pitch and 2 on singles from Jace Jung and Andy Ibáñez. They would continue the fight getting another run on a single with two outs before the game ending ground out.
As you can see, pitching was not the strong part of the game tonight. Nick Margevicius gave up 7 ER in 3.1 IP allowing 12 men on base. Woo-Suk Go, Jordan Balazovic, and Bailey Horn gave up 6 ER 9 hits and walking 3 in their combined 3.2 IP, so they were no better than Nick.
Tomorrow’s projected starters:
TBD vs John Gant (1-2, 6.68 ERA)
Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)
Final: Harrisburg 2 – Erie 3 F/6
Top Performer(s):
Max Clark, CF — 1-for-3, HR, R, RBI
Chris Meyers, LF — 2-for-2, HR, R, 2 RBI
Jake Holton, 1B — 0-for-1, R, BB
Austin Bergner — 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. Austin ended up with the complete game tonight due to it being called for rain. He was having another really good outing before that though racking up the strikeouts.
Game Notes:
Not sure who saw this, but Max Clark hit his first AA home run tonight. It was a solo shot in the 3rd inning to increase the Seawolves lead 3-1. It would end up being the game winning run for the night as well. The inning before that, Chris Meyers hit a 2-run shot. That’s his 7th on the season and 3rd in the last 4 games.
Meanwhile, Austin Bergner was busy dealing and moving up record boards. With his 6 Ks, he’s only 8 away from having the most Ks in their Seawolves career and with the win, he’s just 1 away from being the 5th pitcher to win 20 games (thanks to Tom Reisenweber for these fun facts!)
Did I mention that Max Clark hit his first AA home run? I think I did. It was 108 MPH off the bat. Anyhow, here it is:

Tomorrow’s projected starters:
Game 1: Kenny Serwa (4-2, 4.02 ERA) vs Riley Cornelio (2-1, 2.58 ERA)
West Michigan Whitecaps (High-A)
Final: Lake County 9 – West Michigan 10
Top Performer(s):
Woody Hadeen, SS — 0-for-2, 3 R, 2 BB
Peyton Graham, 2B — 1-for-3, 3B, BB, R, 3 RBI
Patrick Lee, LF — 2-for-4, 2 SB, R, RBI
Preston Howey — 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K. Another outing for Preston Howey where he might not have got any Ks, but he had very quick outings and allowed no base runners. He was able to get 4 outs on just 10 pitches, 8 of which were for strikes.
Game Notes:
Despite the big 3 prospects moving up to Erie, West Michigan keeps on scoring. Today they scored 10 runs, including 8 in the 6th inning. Despite that, there was a run scored in every inning of the game except for the 9th. It saw Lake Country build a 5-2 lead before that big inning. All 8 runs scored in the 6th were with 2 outs started by a bases loaded triple from Peyton Graham. He would score on a Patrick Lee single. After stealing both 2nd base and 3rd base, Patrick Lee would score on an Archer Brookman single. They’d get the bases loaded once more and score 2 more on a John Peck single. Woody Hadeen would score the last run for the Whitecaps tonight after a throwing error. Garrett Pennington didn’t drive in a run, but it wasn’t from the lack of hits. He added 3 tonight after getting 2 yesterday to give him 5 in his first two games in West Michigan.
Woody Hadeen remains hitless in his first 2 games, but he did draw a couple of walks and was hit by a pitch. He scored all 3 times he was on base. But more impressive is this catch that he made in the 2nd inning:

Lake County wouldn’t go down easily though. They’d follow that up with a solo home run by Jose Devers in the 7th and then a single, double, and sac fly would score 3 more in the 8th off of Micah Ashman, who gave up his first earned runs 6/6.
Joe Miller started the game but he didn’t get deep into it. Just 3 innings but his pitch count hit 85. Marco Jimenez also had himself a good outing despite giving up a solo home run in the 5th. He was able to strike out 4 and walked none.
Tomorrow’s projected starters:
Hayden Minton (3-1, 2.87 ERA) vs Jackson Humphries (0-8, 4.11 ERA)
Lakeland Flying Tigers (Single-A)
Final: Tampa 7 – Lakeland 1
Top Performer(s):
Jackson Strong, RF — 0-for-2, R, 2 BB
Franyerber Montilla, SS — 1-for-3, 2B, BB
Stephen Hrustich, LF — 1-for-4, RBI
Luke Stofel — 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K. Once again, Luke gave 5 innings. He was able to get 10 whiffs on his 86 pitches. Wasn’t his sharpest cutting, but he still took the bulk innings in the game.
Game Notes:
Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. And that includes the Lakeland Flying Tigers 12 game winning streak. Not only that, Luke Stofel’s 14 appearance streak of giving up 1 ER or less also was broken as he allowed 3 in todays game. The bullpen didn’t help much either giving up 4 more runs (3 earned) across 3 innings between Duque Hebbert and Jorger Petri.
The offense wasn’t much better though. Franyerber Montilla’s double was the only XBH and it was 1 of only 3 hits from the team as whole. Stephen Hrustich drove in Jackson Strong, who walked twice, for the only run scored by the Flying Tigers today.
They’ll look to rebound and start a new winning streak tomorrow.
