West Michigan

With only two home stands remaining for the Whitecaps, the Midwest League Eastern Division standings are beginning to tighten.

In third place, the Great Lakes Loons are currently a half-game behind the Lake County Captains. The First-place Whitecaps and the Captains each face the Loons for one more six-game series before the end of the regular season, which could make the end of the second half one to watch.

In the Midwest League Western Division, it’s going to be almost anyone’s game. Entering this week, Beloit and South Bend are currently tied for first place, with Cedar Rapids and Quad Cities tied for second and just two and a half games out of first place.

With a goal of maintaining their division lead, West Michigan will look to some of the new faces added to the roster, along with the offensive contributions of Izaac Pacheco, Peyton Graham, Andrew Jenkins, and many others, to push the team to a memorable finish in 2025.

The playoffs are coming, and it’s about to get interesting.

GAME 1 – Fort Wayne: 6, West Michigan: 1

With Preston Howey taking the hill for West Michigan in the series opener at Parkview Field, the TinCaps offense struck quickly. Over two innings, Howey was tagged for four earned runs off six hits to give Fort Wayne an early lead. The Whitecaps’ bats were quiet until the seventh inning, when a sacrifice fly from Brett Callahan scored Garrett Pennington to put West Michigan on the board. Peyton Graham booked a two-hit night for West Michigan to contribute to the six overall hits on the night for West Michigan. Another pair of runs surrendered by the West Michigan bullpen secured a game one win for Fort Wayne.

GAME 2 – West Michigan: 5, Fort Wayne: 4

It may have been another night of just six hits for the Whitecaps offense, but Izaac Pacheco made sure they were impactful just the same. The 22-year-old infielder posted two hits, both home runs, in the top of the first and the top of the third to mark his first multi-home run game since May 30, 2024. Pacheco’s four RBI also marked his first four-RBI campaign since May 25 of this year. West Michigan starter Lucas Elissalt worked 4 1/3 innings for the Whitecaps, surrendering four runs (two earned) off seven hits, while walking a pair and striking out four. In relief, the West Michigan bullpen held the Fort Wayne offense at bay, and a sacrifice fly from Archer Brookman to score Brett Callahan gave West Michigan enough of an edge to take game two.

GAME 3 – West Michigan: 8, Fort Wayne: 3

A rejuvenated West Michigan offense came to play in game three. Austin Murr, Garrett Pennington, Izaac Pacheco, Peyton Graham, and Jack Penney all produced a two-hit night for a collective 13 hits against the Fort Wayne pitching staff at Parkview Field. Of the five extra-base hits on the night, Peyton Graham posted his 22nd double of the season, and Garrett Pennington posted his ninth. Despite surrendering three runs to the TinCaps offense, West Michigan starter Hayden Minton worked six frames for the Whitecaps, striking out seven and only walking one. The West Michigan pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts over nine innings and was able to successfully lock in the game three victory.

GAME 4 – West Michigan: 5, Fort Wayne: 1

More West Michigan offense was on display for game four, and once again, Izaac Pacheco was right in the mix. At the top of the third inning, Pacheco punched his 11th home run of the year and also his third home run in his last three games. Garrett Pennington finished 3-for-5 for the Whitecaps, adding his 10th double since his promotion from Class-A Lakeland. West Michigan starter Rayner Castillo and the Whitecaps bullpen held the Fort Wayne offense to one run, while striking out eight, with Colin Fields picking up his eighth win of the season in another West Michigan victory.

GAME 5 – Fort Wayne: 3, West Michigan: 0

Fort Wayne flipped the script in game five, and there was a different feel to the West Michigan offense on Saturday. The TinCaps pitching staff held the West Michigan lineup to a combined five hits, and two of those five hits came from outfielder Patrick Lee. Whitecaps starter Joe Miller was able to hold Fort Wayne to one run over his four frames of work, but the bullpen was not able to hold the line of defense, forcing West Michigan to take a game five loss.

GAME 6 – West Michigan: 5, Fort Wayne: 0

It’s usually not long before the Whitecaps’ offense is able to kick things back into gear, and Sunday was no exception. Following an RBI single from Peyton Graham in the third inning, it was Izaac Pacheco back for another tear with his second multi-home run game in his last five games with West Michigan. Peyton Graham exploded at the plate with a four-hit day, including a run scored and his 47th RBI of the season. On the bump for West Michigan, Preston Howey worked four fluid, scoreless innings, and the bullpen held position to shut out the TinCaps and take a series victory to wrap up the road trip.

Up Next: Tonight, the Whitecaps are back home for their second-to-last home stand of the regular season, hosting the Lansing Lugnuts.

Pitcher of the Week: RHP Dariel Fregio

Promoted from Class-A Lakeland to West Michigan on July 4, Dariel Fregio was placed to fill some gaps left by the Tigers’ combination of trades and promotions within their High-A bullpen. Fregio, 25, worked two scoreless relief outings against the TinCaps, moving him to four straight scoreless relief appearances for West Michigan.

Player of the Week: INF Izaac Pacheco

Izaac Pacheco wants to new challenge and he’s playing like it. With two multi-home run games over a five-game stretch (five home runs overall), the 22-year-old became the new West Michigan franchise leader in home runs (35) and RBI (155). Facing the TinCaps, Pacheco collected seven hits, three multi-hit games, six runs, five home runs, and 11 RBI for the Whitecaps.

Whitecap to Watch: INF Peyton Graham
With the regular season winding down, Peyton Graham is another offensive force fighting for a jump to the Eastern League. Graham was electric through the six-game stand against the TinCaps, posting four multi-hit games, 11 combined hits, five runs, two doubles, and two RBI for West Michigan. With a stacked Erie infield, movement for Graham and others is currently at the mercy of the Tigers’ next front office move.
