TMLR Recap 6/30: Briceño Back, Graham goes HAM

Detroit Tigers
Josue Briceno in Spring Breakout game

Detroit Tigers affiliates started slowly on Tuesday, but then things got wild at night. We saw the return of a top prosect, a three-double game, and 31 runs in West Michigan. Read all about it below:

Triple-A: Toledo Mud Hens (L 3-1) vs. Iowa Cubs – 39-42 Overall

The Mud Hens welcomed the Iowa Cubs to town for a Tuesday matinee. But the Cubs rudely shut down Toledo’s offense on the way to a tidy 3-1 victory. The Hens took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Brett Callahan singled, stole 2nd, and scored on a Jace Jung liner to right.

But the Cubs came right back against Toledo starter Dylan File, using a walk, a pair of singles, and a sac fly to take a 2-1 lead. Iowa added one more run on a triple and an error, and that was all it took to secure the win. The Hens bullpen was excellent, allowing just one hit over 4.2 scoreless frames, but Toledo’s offense couldn’t scratch across any more runs. They did threaten in the 9th, with singles from Max Anderson and Eduardo Valencia, but Trei Cruz flew out to deep right center to end the contest.

Erie SeaWolves (W 6-4) vs. Akron  –  6-1 2nd Half, 42-33 Overall

This was something of a tandem start for Hayden Minton and Carlos Peña, with Minton covering the first four frames in his second Double-A outing. The Ducks got to him early with a pair of extra-base hits and a wild pitch leading to two runs. But Minton allowed just one more hit over the next three innings. Meanwhile, Peyton Graham was putting the HAM in…Graham. He doubled to right in the 1st inning, hit an RBI double in the 3rd inning, and then roped a 2-run double to left in the 4th.

Garrett Pennington made it a 4-2 SeaWolves lead in the 4th, and then E.J. Exposito and Chris Meyers hit solo home runs to make it 6-2. Peña took the next four innings, getting a little help from his defense in the 6th, and weathering a 3-hit, 2-run Akron rally in the 8th. Then it was up to Trevin Michael to close it out. And he did, though it took an unusual game-ending double play.

West Michigan Whitecaps (L 20-11) vs. Lake County Captains – 6-4 2nd Half, 30-44 Overall

West Michigan went with a bullpen game. It didn’t work terribly well for them. Opener Zack Lee worked a scoreless 1st and then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 2nd. But Logan Berrier entered in the 3rd, put the first four men on base, and ultimately allowed five earned runs. The Whitecaps offense gamely fought back with four runs of their own, getting an RBI rocket from Bryce Rainer and a two-run double to center off the bat of Ricardo Hurtado.

But the Captains kept getting to West Michigan pitchers. Carlos Lequerica came in and seemed to suffer some kind of injury, ultimately recording just two outs while walking three and allowing one run. Juanmi Vasquez was next, allowing another run over 1.1 innings of relief. Ryan Harvey loaded the bases with walks in the 6th, but he managed to keep Lake County from scoring…in that inning. The Whitecaps rallied in the bottom of the frame, pulling back within a run on a 2-run double from Woody Hadeen. And then then two more runs scored on a Hurtado single that got wacky. West Michigan led 8-7. Then Harvey and Thomas Bruss combined to allow eight runs in the 7th inning. More stuff happened, but most of it was bad.  This ended up being the longest 9-inning Whitecaps game since the implementation of the pitch clock, lasting four hours and three minutes. Go get ’em tomorrow.

Woody Hadeen 2/4, 2 2B, 2R, 3RBI, 2BB
Bryce Rainer 2/5, 2R, RBI, BB, 3K
Ricardo Hurtado 3/6, 2B, 2R, 4RBI
Jackson Strong 1/4, RBI, BB, 2K
Clayton Campbell 1/4, 2B, R, 2BB
Patrick Lee 1/2, 3R, RBI, 2BB

Lakeland Flying Tigers (W 7-1) vs. Palm Beach Cardinals – 4-6 2nd Half, 34-41 Overall

Lakeland welcomed in one of the top Detroit Tigers prospects in the form of a rehabbing Josue Briceño, who caught and batted third in the order. It  didn’t take Briceño long to try out the ABS challenge system. We’ll give him a pass. Especially when he hits opposite field home runs, as he did in the 4th inning. But the early story in this game was missed opportunities. Palm Beach felt it first, with Lakeland starter Grayson Grinsell puting four batters on base in the 1st. A well-timed pickoff kept the game scoreless, but Grinsell threw 33 pitches, which meant his day was done.

The Flying Tigers put multiple runners on base on each of the first four innings, but they led just 3-0 because they began the game 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position. But they finally broke through in the 7th when Jesus Pinto launched a 3-run homer to left. But the MVP of this game might be the Lakeland bullpen, led by Pedro Garcia, who tossed three scoreless, hitless innings to keep things close early in the contest. Nick Dumesnil added an RBI single in the 8th to finish the scoring, and give the Flygers a much-needed victory.

Jordan Yost 2/3, 2B, RBI, 2BB, SB(7)
Beau Ankeney 2/5, 2K, SB(2)
Josue Briceño 1/3, HR
Carson Rucker 2/3, 2R, BB, K, SB(12)
Jude Warwick 1/4, 2R, BB, K
Nick Dumesnil 3/3, R, RBI, 2BB

Rookie Ball Recap

FCL Tigers vs. FCL Blue Jays – PPD

Storms ended this one before it started. The teams will play a makeup game tomorrow.

DSL Tigers 1 (W 6-3) vs. DSL Nationals – (10-12 Overall)

The Nationals jumped out to an early lead, and were trying for more when Randy Santana ended the inning with a strong throw to the plate to nab Juan Duran. Then it was a bit of a back and forth affair, but Tigers starter Sammy Zarraga navigated some traffic on the bases and a kept the Tigers in it. Outfielder Jonathan Moya and DH Carlos Benavides both picked up a pair of RBIs, while Jose Ramirez and Oscar Tineo added one apiece.

DSL Tigers 2 (L 10-4) vs. DSL NYY Yankees (9-13 Overall)

The Yankees scored four times in the 1st and four times in the 6th to put this game out of reach. There were two hits, two errors, and two runs before Tigers starter Sheroky Rodriguez even recorded an out, and that set the tone for a sloppy affair. Willian Berti hit two doubles and scored twice, but the Tigers went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and scored three unearned runs.
