Erie SeaWolves

Erie SeaWolves’s starter Wilmer Flores last year was waiting to for Arizona Fall Ball to start. Saturday night, he made one of the biggest starts of his young career.

Over the last few weeks, the Erie SeaWolves have been getting a steady influx of players from High-A West Michigan that have played a big role in their quest for a post-season birth. The last time the SeaWolves made the post-season was in 2013. That roster featured 13 players who would play in the major leagues.

    1. Robbie Weinhardt
    2. Kyle Lobstein
    3. Melvin Mercedes
    4. Drew VerHagen
    5. Warwick Saupold
    6. Blaine Hardy
    7. Eugenio Suarez
    8. Hernan Perez
    9. James McCann
    10. Daniel Fields
    11. Jon Link
    12. Ramon Cabrera
    13. Tyler Collins

This season, Kerry Carpenter, who put himself on the Tigers’ radar with an impressive 63 game stretch, in which he put up a slash line of .304/ .359/ .646 with 22 home runs and 48 RBIs, is up in Detroit now along with right-hander Garrett Hill.

The Erie SeaWolves classes of 1999-2001

While Wilmer Flores has been with the team since May 19, the 21-year-old right-hander stepped up at the perfect time. He has struggled since the beginning of September. Saturday night in a game the SeaWolves needed the most. He pitched 6 innings, allowed just one hit and struck out eight.

Ty Madden, who got the call-up to Erie in August, has adjusted to the new level well. In 35.2 innings of work, he is 2-2 with an ERA of 2.78 with 49 strikeouts. He has a higher K per 9 so far (12.36) at Double-A than at his time in West Michigan. His last start against Richmond was not one to remember (4H, 3HR allowed in 4.2IP of work) he punched out 9. Madden is in just in first season of pro ball and to make this quick of adjustment is hopefully a good sign things of time.

Meanwhile, on the positional player side, shortstop Danny Serretti, who the Tigers just drafted back in July in the 6th round out of the University of North Carolina, came up on Tuesday and is 5-for-15 (.333). Serretti spent just 11 games at Low-A Lakeland before getting the call-up to West Michigan on August 31. He continued to hit with the Whitecaps. In 10 games over 38 at-bats, Serretti put up a slash line of .289/.414/ .395.

The switch hitting Serretti is known for his batting stance and gets his bat through the zone, allowing him to barrel it up quickly. One number that Detroit Tigers fans should like is this. 24 walks to 21 strikeouts. He may not have a lot of power in his bat but to come up and make an impact so quickly, between myself and Chris Brown, we can’t remember a positional player to come up this quickly in the same year they were drafted.

Parker Meadows

Meadows has been the catalyst for the SeaWolves offense in September. He is batting .356 (21-for-59) with an OPS of .933 and a WRC+ of 160. This week alone against Richmond, 6-for-20 with 3 RBIs. Since July 1st, he has been one of the best hitters for the SeaWolves. His development has been one of the best stories in the Tigers system this season.
