Tigers ML Report Week 9 Recap: Jace Jung shines in Gem City

Jace Jung

As the Detroit Tigers minor league system kicks off week 10 on Tuesday, let’s recap an eventful Week 9 across the system as both the Florida Complex League and Dominican Summer League kick off their seasons on Monday. Here are the rosters for both DSL teams and the FCL.

The FCL Tigers roster boasts noteworthy names, including Reylin Perez and Rayner Castillo, both 18-year-old prospects from the Dominican Republic. Perez, who is playing in the U.S. for the first time, showcased remarkable numbers for both DSL squads in 2022, batting over .300 with seven home runs. Meanwhile, Castillo seeks recovery and progress after a series of injuries disrupted his debut FCL season last year.

Without further ado, let’s go through the rest of the system, as several of the top prospects in the Tigers system had not only great weeks but some incredible months.

Toledo Mud Hens 24-32 IL West. Next series: Buffalo

Toledo’s pitching has taken a beating as of late, as the Indians outscored the Mud Hens 54 to 18. Justyn-Henry Malloy’s month of May is one he would like to forget, as he hit just .205/.364/.352. One reason behind his struggles is teams are figuring out how to throw to Henry. They will go either inside and jam Henry or have him chasing sliders away. He has been playing the outfield as of late, something to pay attention to as injuries continue to hit Detroit.

However, one hitter continues to be steady, and that is Parker Meadows. After a slow start to the month, Meadows, since May 16th, has hit .266 with three home runs and is walking at an 8.5% clip. While the batting average may not bowl you over, the quality of contact is there, as he leads the team in barrels with 15. (8.7% clip)An important thing to remember about Meadows this season is hitting better against lefties.

Erie SeaWolves 29-22 Eastern League Southwest. Next series: Bowie

Erie took care of business on the road last week against Richmond, going 5-1 as the offense, led by Eastern League Player of the Month Colt Keith (number one on our Top 25 list), outscored the Flying Squirrels 48-12.

Both Jake Holton and Andrew Navigato both hit over .400 for the week as Erie got steady contributions from everyone on offense. Pitching wise, three Erie starters went six innings for the first time, with Keider Montero turned in his best Double-A start since he has been promoted. He struck out nine, allowing just a pair of hits and walks. Sawyer Gipson-Long, who had a start off to work on a new pitch, a cutter, came back on Saturday and had his longest outing of his career. He threw 101 pitches, striking out eight and allowed just a pair of singles as he took a no-hitter into the sixth.

Wilmer Flores looks to be back on track as one of the better arms in the system. Over his last eight starts, he has allowed two runs or fewer, and in two starts last week against Richmond over nine innings of work, allowed just two runs, two hits, allowed five walks and struck out 14.

As of now, Erie maintains first place ahead of Tuesday’s game, leading Altoona by a single game. Following an 8-13 start to the season, the SeaWolves turned it around with a .692 winning percentage in May, posting an 18-8 record. The forthcoming three weeks promise excitement as Erie vies for a playoff spot.

West Michigan Whitecaps 28-23 Midwest League East. Next series: Wisconsin

Jace Jung (#9 on our Top 25) had the best week of any minor leaguer in the system, as he went .565/.621/.957 (13-for-23) and that helped him earn High-A Player of the Week.  Jung, who has been hitting the ball extremely hard, got rewarded for it down in Dayton.

Chris Meyers and Justice Bigbie turned in impressive weeks, with Meyers going 9-for-13 and Bigbie going 6-for-15 at the plate. In terms of pitching, Garrett Burhenn put forth a strong start, striking out seven while yielding only one earned run and four hits over six innings. Relief pitcher Trevin Michael, who started the season in Lakeland, struck out four in 2.1 innings. His tenure with the Whitecaps mirrored his short stint with the Flying Tigers, as he received a call-up to Erie on Tuesday.

Single-A Lakeland Flying Tigers 21-30 Florida State League West. Next Series: Tampa.

Dom Johnson was the big standout this week as he went 7-for-16, with a pair of home runs, as Lakeland went 2-4 against Jupiter on the road. Johnson has been one of Lakeland’s most consistent bats, as he leads the team in barrels with eight and has had the most hard hit balls with 47.

Reliever Elvis Alvarado started his rehab assignment with the Flying Tigers, allowing one run over three hits and striking out a pair. Right-hander Cole Patten, who was drafted in the 17th round in the 2022 draft out of Villanova, continues to be the consistent reliever for Lakeland. Over his last 18 innings, he has allowed five earned runs over 11 hits, walking six and striking out 19.
