Paul Wilson

Paul Wilson Scouting Report

Physical Description and Background: Paul Wilson boasts an ideal pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, with a high waist and plenty of room to add good mass. He shows an athletic, free-and-easy delivery with a relatively short arm action that adds a bit of deception, and a traditional ¾ arm slot. Wilson finishes on line to the plate in a good stance to defend his position. His father Trevor pitched in the big leagues for parts of eight seasons.

Fastball – 50

Wilson throws almost exclusively 2-seam fastballs in the 91-94 mph range, though there have been reports of him touching 97 mph or higher. The pitch shows solid arm-side run, and he has some feel for locating it to his glove side as a swingback offering to right-handed hitters.

Slider45

A sweepy offering in the high-70s to low-80s with impressive horizontal break. There’s not a ton of depth to it, though, and it’s probably not quite hard enough yet to be a consistent swing-and-miss offering for him.

Curve – 40

A more traditional curveball in the mid-70s that does have good depth, but he doesn’t have consistent command of it. Tends to cast it up and away to his arm side.

Changeup – 40

Wilson throws what appears to be a straight changeup in the low 80s. The velocity separation is good, but it doesn’t show much sink or fade.

Command – 40

There are times when Wilson locks in to the strike zone and can locate to the edges. But he shows some inconsistency in his mechanics and release point that lead to non-competitive pitches well out of the zone.

Overall: While Wilson’s scouting report doesn’t read like that of a top prospect, there’s still a ton to like here. He’s an athletic mover whose arm works well. He has feel for four different pitches, and there’s a ton of room for growth. Young pitchers can explode in a million different directions, but it’s not hard to envision Wilson gaining velocity as he gets stronger, adding a cutter or a harder slider, and eventually developing into a mid-rotation lefty in the mold of Tarik Skubal.
