Jack O’Loughlin Prospect Report:

Background and Physical Description: Standing at 6’5, 223 lbs, O’Loughlin hails from Australia. He signed as an international free agent in 2016 and after two seasons with the Adelaide Bite of the Australian Baseball League, he made his debut stateside in 2018 as a member of the Connecticut Tigers. O’Loughlin has a tall, large frame with wide shoulders. He has grown fully since coming over to the United States. After starting the season at West Michigan, O’Loughlin got the call-up to Toledo, the only pitcher to do move up two levels in 2023.  The lefty O’Loughlin has repeatable mechanics on all four of his pitching offerings, as he throws from a mid 3/4 angle.  O’Loughlin also has a good first move to first.

Fastball-40 His fastball sits at 91-84 and has touched 95 at points during the season. He can spot the pitch on the corners against righties and has good natural tail and sink overall. Can induce a lot of ground balls as a result of this pitch because of its natural sink.  Because of his mechanics are repeatable, this pitch can come in on righties quick after he throws his curve or change. Needs to throw it with precision in order to be effective.

Slider-50 His slider sits around 81-83 with good late diving action on righties. He can finish hitters with this pitch. Can sometimes have more of a sweeping action to the pitch.

Change-45 Tough pitch to pick up with good, late fade, usually sits at 83-85 with the pitch. He can steal the inside corner on righties with the pitch as maintains arm speed throughout. Gets a lot of groundballs with this pitch.

Curve-40 His curve sits around 75-77, loopy with some late, sharp bite to it. He can get righties to chase with the pitch on the corners or draw weak contact.

Overall: O’Loughlin has made some strides this season. While the move to Triple-A may look like an org move, he has held his own at Triple-A as of late with a K per 9 of 10.30 over his last five starts with a FIP of 4.78. He needs to cut the walk rate to be effective at the big league level. His command can be inconsistent and in order for him to be effective inside, he will need to steal more strikes with his secondaries. He will be Rule 5 eligible in December.
