Trei Cruz Physical Description and Background:Â Cruz, a third generation professional baseball player and son of current Rice University head baseball and former Tiger’s hitting coach, Jose Cruz Jr. Over 3 seasons at Rice, Trei Cruz posted an .887 which prompted the Tigers to pick him in the 3rd round of the 2020 MLB draft. Cruz had also been drafted twice before in the 35 and 37 round but ultimately opted not so sign, a decision that paid off for Cruz. Listed at 6’1 204.
Hit-45
A switch-hitter. Starts with an upright stance, knees bent, loads then drops his hands slightly. Cruz has a good approach and is more than willing to draw his walks, posting a 16% walk rate in parts of 2 seasons with AA Erie. Cruz has been lifting the ball very well this season as he has the highest FB% in his professional career but ultimately doesn’t make enough hard contact. An inability to hit right handers has shown to be an issue.
Power-45Â
Below average power in Cruz’s bat but has potential to play up with his approach and ability to lift. So far this season Cruz has already set a career high in home runs (12) by 4 in just 87 games. As far as raw power,
Run-55
Above average runner which the Tigers thought enough of to move Cruz to centerfield. His above average speed however does not translate to the basepath as he has just 7 swipes on the year.
Field-55
Before this season the Tigers strictly had Cruz playing SS, 3B, and 2B but this season he has seen a majority of his starts in centerfield. Actions are good in the infield as are the instincts in center
Arm-55
Another above average defensive tool for Cruz. The majority of his infield starts have been at short where he is able to make strong throws.
Overall: Cruz projects as a platoon utility type player. His versatility in the field and patient switch hitting bat should be enough for him to make the big leagues at some point. He will likely never hit enough to stick around.
