Tigers Minor League Recap – 7/30
Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)
Final: St. Paul 3 – Toledo 4 F/8
Top Performer(s):
Gage Workman, 2B — 2-for-3, 2B, RBI, R, SB
Jace Jung, DH — 1-for-3, 2B, RBI, BB
Hao-Yu Lee, 2B — 1-for-4, RBI
Nick Margevicius — 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. Nick started the game and pitched really well getting 6 Ks and allowing just the 1 run.
Game notes:
A fun, close game tonight between Toledo and St. Paul. Each team would score a run in the 1st. Then the Mud Hens would score a run in the 3rd and 5th to take a 3-1 lead. Tyler Mattison would come in the 6th to make his AAA debut and the Saints would score 2 runs to tie the game back up. It didn’t last long though when a Gage Workman single would score Trei Cruz and give the Mud Hens their 4th and game winning run.
It was a games of 2s for Mattison tonight. He would get 2 outs, give up 2 hits, allow 2 runs (both earned) and strike out 2. Not the greatest showings, but that could have been some jitters for his debut.
After Mattison, PJ Poulin would come in and get the win after throwing 1.1 IP and facing the minimum batters with 2 Ks. RJ Petit would then come in and earn the save in the the weather shortened game.
Tomorrow’s projected starters:
TBD vs Marco Raya (1-6, 6.58 ERA)
Erie SeaWolves (Double-A)
Final: Akron 7 – Erie 3
Top Performer(s):
Kevin McGonigle, SS — 2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI
Max Clark, CF — 2-for-5, 2B
Jake Holton, DH — 3-for-4, R
Blair Calvo — 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. Blair was the only Sea wolves pitcher to not give up a run tonight. He faced 4 batters and threw just 11 pitches in his lone inning and did the best he could to keep them in the game late.
Game Notes:
Both Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark continue to swing the hot bat since getting promoted to AA. Both had 2 hits tonight and both got a 2B as one of those hits. The only difference is that Kevin drove in the 3 runs the Seawolves would score tonight. Jake Holton had 3 hits himself, all singles, and was the only other hitter to get more than 1 tonight.

Kevin McGonigle with his second hit of the night. So you may ask yourself, why post a bloop single? Third straight multiple hit game and his fourth in Double-A. pic.twitter.com/MX6j7Ai1ut

Kenny Serwa started the game and had a rough outing. Would only got 2 IP, tied for the 2nd shortest outing this year for him, he would allow 7 base runners on 3 hits and 4 BBs. He didn’t strike anyone out and gave up 5 runs, 2 earned. That’s because there were 3 errors in the game while he was pitching — 2 by himself and 2 by Kevin McGonigle.
The bullpen would do better. Combined they went 6 IP, allowed 2 ER, 1 BB and 6 Ks. The Seawolves quiet offense though wouldn’t get the comeback.
Tomorrow’s projected starters:
Game 1: Max Alba (0-0, 7.20 ERA) vs Trenton Denholm (9-4, 3.14 ERA)
West Michigan Whitecaps (High-A)
Final: Dayton 3 – West Michigan 6
Top Performer(s):
Seth Stephenson, CF — 2-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB
Jack Penny, 2B — 1-for-1, 2 RBI
Woody Hadeen, SS — 2-for-4, R
Moises Rodriguez — 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. Moises Rodriguez picked up his first A+ win and his first A+ strike out today in his 3rd appearance. More incredible is the level of efficiency in which he did so. He faced 5 batters and got his strikeout all on 11 pitches.
Game Notes:
Not a lot of extra bases on display today from either team. Dayton would have their first and only extra base hit in the top of the 1st that would start off their scoring. They would score 2 more in the 4th inning on a single and sac fly.
It wouldn’t be until the 5th when the Whitecaps would score their first run, also on their sole extra base hit, when Seth Stephenson hits a solo home run. They would come within 1 of Dayton with a Patrick Lee single in the 6th inning. Then the 4 runs 7th would give them a lead that they wouldn’t lose. Seth Stephenson ties it with a single, Jack Penney would take the lead on a 2 run single after coming in as a pinch runner for Peyton Graham in 6th after he was hit by a pitch, and Luke Gold would drive in the final run on a fielding error.
Joe Miller started the game and did pretty well. He allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks in 5.2 IP. He also was able to rack up 5 Ks in those innings. More impressive to me was the bullpen. As noted above, Moises Rodriguez was very efficient in his outing. To follow him, Haden Erbe got the hold throwing 9 pitches in his 1 inning of work and Marco Jimenez got the save on 8 pitches in his inning of work. 28 pitches, 20 strikes, 2 Ks and just 1 hit allowed in 3.1 IP from the bullpen.
Tomorrow’s projected starters:
Preston Howey (5-1, 2.43 ERA) vs Luke Hayden (2-5, 4.09 ERA)
Lakeland Flying Tigers (Single-A)
Game 1 Final: Dunedin 11 – Lakeland 18 F/8
Top Performer(s):
Jackson Strong, CF — 4-for-6, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI
Samuel Gil, SS — 2-for-6, 3 R, 2 RBI
Sergio Tapia, C — 4-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI
R.J. Sales — 4.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. R.J. really had his cutter working today. He got 7 whiffs on 13 swings and a 48% CSW%. And in a game that saw tons of runs, he was able to hold Dunedin to just 3.
Game Notes:
Offense was not lacking in this game. The 2nd inning and the 6th inning were the only innings where no runs were scored and there was a 9 run half inning for Dunedin and an 8 run half inning for Lakeland in the 8th, which was in extra innings when the game was tied 10-10. Lakeland got 23 hits in this game, 4 of which were HRs, and drew 4 walks. Every Lakeland hitter got a hit and 3 hitters had 4 hits. Bligh Madris had quite the rehab start going 4-for-5 and hitting 2 HRs, driving in 5.
And then there was the pitching. The bullpen did not look very sharp. They walked 11 and struck out just 2 while giving up 6 hits and allowing 8 of the 11 runs to score.
This game has been a wild one. Samuel Gil smokes a double into the right field corner, scoring two. It’s now 17-10 Lakeland pic.twitter.com/TSTOq50PU4

Still, Lakeland was able to walk away with the win in game 1 of 2 tonight.
Game 2 Final: Dunedin 8 – Lakeland 2
Top Performer(s):
Samuel Gil, 2B — 1-for-2, R, 2 BB
Cristian Santana, LF — 1-for-1, R, RBI, 2 BB
Abel Bastidas, C — 1-for-3, RBI
Logan Berrier — 3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Logan would get the bulk of the innings in game 2 and had a pretty good game. Didn’t get a ton of whiffs (just 3 on 15 swings) but he did get a ton of called strikes and not a lot of hard contact
Game Notes:
For game 2, the offense couldn’t quite keep it going. Scoring just 2 runs on 2 singles. Carson Rucker had the lone XBH this game and Cristian Santana got on base in all 3 PA. Between the two games, Samuel Gil got on base 5 times and scored 4 runs giving him a great day.
Ethan Sloan took the loss in this game allowing 7 runs, 4 earned, to score. Wuilberth Mendez would start the game and face just 4 batters, getting 2 outs one of which was a sac fly to score Dunedin’s first run of the game. Logan Berrier would get the bulk of the innings and performed pretty well, but the damage had already been done.
