It was a very busy day on the farm, with many of the system’s top prospects having big games, and one of the rookie ball clubs clinching a playoff berth. Read all about it below!
Triple-A: Toledo Mud Hens (W 9-2) vs. Iowa Cubs – 57-63 Overall
A rehabbing Brant Hurter took the mound to start this one, but he struggled for his third consecutive outing, allowing a run and getting just two outs before leaving with the bases loaded. Fortunately Nick Sandlin ended the threat, allowing Andrew Sears to take over and dominate for five scoreless, hitless innings. The Mud Hens offense also stepped up, with Chris Meyers doubling in his first Triple-A at-bat, and Bennett Lee blasting a 3-run bomb for his first Triple-A homer.
Toledo played two more in the 3rd on a Meyers RBI single and an RBI double from Andrew Navigato. Sears continued to dominate, then he passed the torch to fellow 2023 draftee Hayden Minton for his scoreless Triple-A debut. The Hens added three more in the 8th, with a Jace Jung double the big blow, and they cruised to the 9-2 win.

Erie SeaWolves (L 6-5, 11 innings) vs. New Hampshire Fisher Cats – 31-15 2nd Half, 67-47 Overall
Joe Miller drew the start for Erie, and he spent most of his outing dealing with traffic on the basepaths. The Fisher Cats took an early 1-0 lead on a pair of singles, a double steal, and a passed ball by Thayron Liranzo. The SeaWolves jumped back in front in the 3rd inning on a 2-run Zyhir Hope home run, his 2nd blast with his new organization. But New Hampshire and Dub Gleed came right back in the 4th, with a leadoff triple and then four two-out hits, pushing the score to 4-2. And that’s the way it stayed until the 8th, when Hope singled, moved to 3rd on a Liranzo single, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Wolves couldn’t score another in the 8th, but they managed to tie it with 2 outs in the 9th on Hope’s fourth hit of the night. Both teams plated a run in the 10th, with Andrew Jenkins singling the other way to tie it for Erie. But New Hampshire scored in the 11th and the SeaWolves couldn’t match, leading to the 6-5 final.

West Michigan Whitecaps (X X-X) @ South Bend Cubs – XX-XX 2nd Half, XX-XX Overall
It was a great start for Rainer and Rayner in this one. Bryce (Rainer) continued his home run spree with a massive solo shot to center in the 1st inning, his fourth straight game with a homer. Then Rayner (Castillo) struck out the side on 13 pitches in the bottom of the first. Cubs outfielder Kade Snell made the lead disappear to begin the 2nd inning with a monster home run of his own, but then both Castillo and the South Bend pitching locked in. In fact, the Whitecaps never got another hit.
Castillo was excellent, striking out a career-high 9 batters. But he seemed to tire a little bit in the 6th, allowing a leadoff walk, and then a one-out, two-run homer to Josiah Hartshorn that proved to be the difference in the game. West Michigan’s offense basically did nothing, walking just thrice times and striking out a whopping 16 times. Juanmi Vasquez add three strikeouts in relief, but the Cubs tacked on two more runs against Preston Howey, and that was all she wrote.

Lakeland Flying Tigers (X X-X) @ St. Lucie Mets – XX-XX 2nd Half, XX-XX Overall
We saw a few firsts in this one as Lakeland put together a steady offensive assault on the Mets. Maddox Molony, Detroit’s 6th-round pick this year, picked up his first pro RBI with a single in the 2nd. Jesus Pinto made it 2-0 with a single in the 3rd, Brady Ballinger picked up his first professional hit on a near home run in the 4th, and Molony brought home two more runs in the 5th.
They Flying Tigers blew the game open in the 7th, scoring three runs on singles from Pinto, Michael Oliveto, and Angel De Los Santos, and adding two more on a Ballinger walk and a Jordan Yost sac fly. The Lakeland pitchers handled the rest, with Caleb Leys, Jose Guzman, Leonardo Rossell, and Bryce Alewine combining to allow just one run on five hits.

Rookie Ball Recap
Tuesday marked the end of the 2026 Dominican Summer League regular season. The DSL is massive, with 51 teams spread across 8 divisions. Last year the league introduced the DSL Cup, a postseason tournament to determine a champion. It’s a bit like the College World Series, with 16 teams (8 division winners, 8 wild card teams) splitting into groups of four to compete in round robin pool play. Then the four pool winners compete in more traditional postseason rounds.
DSL Tigers 1 (W 5-1, 7 innings) vs. DSL Cubs Blue – (21-35 Overall)
The Tigers 1 have long been eliminated from playoff contention. But they had a chance to play spoiler, and help their organizational brothers in the process. And they did just that. The Cubs Blue came into the game sitting 15th in the DSL playoff picture with a 33-21 record, and the Tigers 2 in the 16th slot, tied with three other teams with a 33-22 record. The Cubs took an 1-0 lead in the 1st, and they held it until the 4th, when the Tigers surged ahead on a Fabian Dorta double and RBI singles from Enny Rodriguez and Edwinyer Martinez. Rodriguez added another RBI knock in the 5th, Omar Bustamante added an RBI groundout, and Howard tacked on a run-scoring single in the 6th. The pitchers did the rest, with Luis Vasquez, Oliver Castillo, and Yorsua Balanta combining to toss five scoreless frames.
DSL Tigers 2 ( 11-6, 7 innings) vs. DSL Phillies (34-22 Overall)
These games were taking place at the same time, so the Tigers 2 couldn’t just sit back and hope for help. This was a back-and-forth affair, with plenty of twists and turns. The Phillies scored first, but then when Eduardo Tusen crushed his 7th home run of the year to the the game. The Tigers added two more runs in the 2nd, only to have the Phillies explode for five runs in the 3rd. A Tigers sac fly made it a 6-4 Phillies lead, which is how it stayed until the 6th inning. Andy Mata and Edgar Lugo kicked off a huge inning with back-to-back solo homers, and the Phillies pitching collapsed. A walk with the bases loaded gave the Tigers the lead, and then Sterlin Bazil added the exclamation point with a grand slam. Franyerson Reyes (not Yorsua Balanta, that was my mistake) got the final six outs, and the celebration began.
Yorsua Balanta induces a game-ending double play, and based on the ensuing celebration we’re assuming the DSL Tigers2 have clinched a spot in the playoffs. Congratulations to everyone involved! pic.twitter.com/T9iFb1QGp8
