It’s a new era for the Detroit Tigers, but watching new prospects is always fun. And we have plenty of old faces remaining to keep the affiliates competitive. We lost one game to rain, but otherwise it was a solid night on the farm. Read all about it below!
Triple-A: Toledo Mud Hens (W 4-3, 10 innings) vs. Omaha Storm Chasers – 52-56 Overall
Fan favorite knuckleballer Kenny Serwa made his Triple-A debut in this one. He dealt with traffic on the bases and allowed a solo home run, as knuckleballers often do, but otherwise he made a strong first impression win Toledo. Andrew Navigato tied the game for the Hens with a solo homer in the 3rd, but Omaha edged back ahead on a 2-out single in the 4th.
Max Anderson immediately tied it again in the bottom of the frame with his 12th Triple-A homer of the season. The teams traded runs again in the 7th, with Brandon Drury smacking a solo home run off Beau Brieske, and Brett Callahan scoring in the bottom of the inning on a Tyler Gentry double play. The Mud Hens had a chance to win it in the 9th, getting three hits and a walk, but a poorly timed double play kept things tied. Tanner Rainey was excellent in the 10th, picking up two strikeouts and not allowing the bonus runner to advance. The bottom of the inning began with a Trei Cruz single and an intentional walk to Jace Jung. That set the stage for Anderson to walk it off and start the week right for the Mud Hens.

Erie SeaWolves (L 2-0) vs. Altoona Curve – 23-11 2nd Half, 59-43 Overall
The big story in this game was the highly anticipated arrival of Zyhir Hope, one of the three players the Tigers received from the Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade. Hope joining Josue Briceno, and Thayron Liranzo, and two hitters with 50+ stolen bases, and Izaac Pacheco’s in his first game with SeaWolves since late June, suggested a potential offensive explosion. So, of course, Erie was shut out on just four hits.
Hope drew a walk, and hit the ball hard twice, though both were outs. Both teams went with a bullpen game in this one. And the pitching chaos seemed to work. Erie starter Colin Fields was outstanding, but so was every Altoona pitcher. The only runs of the game came when Curve first baseman Callan Moss mashed a 2-run homer off new Erie reliever Zane Barnhart. The Wolves did manage to threaten in the 9th with men on the corners and one out, but Thayron Liranzo and and Andrew Jenkins both struck out to end the game.

West Michigan Whitecaps (W 12-5) @ Fort Wayne Tincaps – 20-17 2nd Half, 43-57 Overall
The Whitecaps took an early 2-0 lead in this one thanks to the first High-A home run for Beau Ankeney, and they never really looked back. A Bryce Rainer single plus an error made it 3-1 in the 3rd, and then the Caps started pouring it on. Ricardo Hurtado crushed a 3-run homer in the 5th to push the lead to 6-2.
The Tincaps fought back to make it 6-4, but then West Michigan pulled away again. A 2-run double from Hurtado, and RBI knocks from Clayton Campbell and Jackson Strong made it a 10-4 game, and Cristian Santana tacked on a solo homer in the 8th. Whitecaps starter Rayner Castillo was solid over an 84-pitch outing, though he came an out short of qualifying for the win.

Rookie Ball Recap
DSL Tigers 1 (L 13-6, 7 innings) vs. DSL Mets Blue – (17-29 Overall)
The season has turned south on the DSL Tigers 1, with five losses in six games. They fell behind 6-2 in this one, but battled back to tie things in up in the 5th. Then they promptly allowed seven runs over the final two innings. Carlos Benavides was the star on offense, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
DSL Tigers 2 (W 10-5) @ DSL Rangers Red (27-19 Overall)
The red hot Tigers2 squad won their fifth game in a row thanks to a huge 8-run outburst in the 7th inning. It was a low-scoring affair for the first six innings. Infielder Eduardo Tusen put the Tigers on top with a 2-run single in the 2nd, while starter Sheroky Rodriguez and hard-throwing reliever Ericksson De Los Santos combined to allow just two runs. The Tigers used two walks and four hits in the 7th to break the game open, with a 3-run homer from Yojan Coronel serving as the biggest blow.
