RHP Wilmer Flores Scouting Report

Wilmer Flores

Wilmer Flores

Physical Description: Big and sturdy, with long legs and broad shoulders. Not outwardly muscular and a little bit of baby fat in his face belies his solid athleticism. His effortful delivery and moderate head whack led many to project a future in the bullpen, but he had no trouble throwing quality strikes and repeating his delivery last year.

Fastball: 60

Legitimate plus pitch that sits in the 92-95 MPH range and can reach the upper 90s in shorter stints. Effective velocity is higher, and the pitch seems to get on hitters faster than they realize. Misses bats in the zone and works very well just above the zone.

Slider: 55

The harder of his two breaking balls, and often referred to as a cutter. Sits in the 83-86 range with good, sharp break away from right-handed hitters. Also works it inside to lefties, though more under their hands than at their back foot.

Curve: 55

Flores throws his curve in the upper-70s and it mimics the look of his slider, but has more depth. Doesn’t throw it as much as the harder breaking ball, but it misses bats and he has good feel for dropping it in the zone.

Changeup: NA

A nonexistent pitch at the moment, as he threw just a handful during the 2022 season. Reportedly wasn’t comfortable with a traditional circle-change grip and has been working on more of a split-change this off-season, with some promising early results.

Command: 50

Made remarkable strides with his command last year, to the point where he became one of the better strike throwers in all of minor-league baseball. Consistently locates his fastball and breaking balls around the edges of the plate.

Overall: One of the best stories of the Tigers system over the the last few years, the undrafted Flores could be a #3 starter if he can develop feel and command of his changeup. Could still be a viable back-end starter without the cambio, but he also has the stuff to pitch in the back of a bullpen should the Tigers decide to go that route with him.

What did the TMLR staff say?

Rogelio: I talked to Flores right as spring training started. He spent time in the off-season working on a changeup and trying to increase his stamina. He is one of the few pitchers in the system that can miss bats with his fastball.
