Game 1 Final/7: Louisville 3 – Toledo 5

Ricky Vanasco — 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Ricky got the win today after Sawyer Gipson-Long had some issues with walks and would make it just 3.2 IP tonight.
Game notes:
Back-to-back double headers for Louisville and Toledo. Game 1 would see 8 runs scored in the 7 inning game, including 4 for the Mud Hens in the 5th and 3 for Louisville in the 6th. Brett Callahan would get his first XBH since 7/23, 11 games without 1, and it wouldn’t be a cheap one as it was an 111 MPH double that was nearly 3 MPH harder than the next hardest hit ball in the game. Josue Briceño notched his 2nd AAA hit, a 102.8 MPH single in the third.

The big 5th inning would be all the Mud Hens would need as it gave them the 5-0 lead and they wouldn’t look back.

Jack Little — 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. 4th pitcher used in the bullpen game, he would help keep the team in it.
Game notes:
Last game of the night and it would require extras to complete it. The Louisville Bats would strike first with a 3 run 1st inning thanks to a pair of HRs for Edwin Arroyo and Michael Chavis. Feeling a little jealous, the Mud Hens would do the exact same thing in the 3rd as Seby Zavala and Jace Jung would hit a pair in their own 3 run inning. That would be all the scoring until a bases loaded 2 out walk in the bottom of the 8th would give Louisville the walk off win.

Carlos Peña — 5.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. This was the longest start of Peña’s season and his second straight scoreless outing. He allowed just 5 singles and got 60 strikes in 91 pitches thrown.
Game Notes:
A bit of a pitchers duel today. There would be just 3 XBH between both teams, all 3 were doubles. Each team would have 13 Ks and half of the runs scored in the game were in the top of the 2nd thanks to a Seth Stephenson double to drive in Roberto Campos, stolen base, and scoring on a passed ball.

After Peña, Yoniel Curet, Tyler Owens, and trade acquisition Zane Barnhart would all get some innings with Barnhart getting the save.

Win Scott — 3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. Getting the second start of his young career, Win Scott would not get the win tonight. He’d end up with the no decision. And if not for a throwing error, he would have had a really clean stat line and might have gone deeper.
Game Notes:
As I noted with Win Scott, he got the start tonight as their normal Thursday starter, Lucas Elissalt, was promoted to Erie. Scott would do pretty good despite the 3 unearned runs. All 3 runs, plus a 4th in the 4th inning, would give the Lugnuts an early 4-0 lead as they scored all 4 runs with 2 outs. And they’d look like they were cruising to victory.
Cristian Santana would have different ideas as he would get the Whitecaps to within 1 run after a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 4th. After the Lugnuts would drive in Daniel Bucciero after his 1 out triple, the Whitecaps would immediately respond back with a solo shot from Jackson Strong and a 2 out double from Samuel Gil to tie it 5-5 after 5. All the bats would go quiet until Ricardo Hurtado wakes them up with a 2 out single in the bottom of the 9th to get the winning run on base. Beau Ankeney would come up next and as a part of his 3 hit night, clobber the second pitch he would see to center field, hitting the game winning 2-run HR giving the Whitecaps the win.

Pedro Garcia — 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Came in relief for the starter, Cale Wetwiska, Pedro would log nearly as many innings and get the save. His slider would dominate the Bradenton hitters as they’d put 5 in play and only 1 was hard hit. He would get 7 whiffs on 16 swings with it and get a whopping 8 for 9 first pitch strikes.
Game Notes:
For a game that the Lakeland bats would muster as many runs as they did hits, you wouldn’t think it would go there way. Yet a 3-0 victory would propel them. A 2 run single from Enderson Delgado in the 2nd and a wild pitch would allow Zach MacDonald to score the 3rd run in the 5th after he collected his 26th SB would sum up the runs. All the hits and runs would come from the bottom 3 in the batting order. The top 5 would go 0-for-18 with 1 walk from Angel De Los Santos.

Bradenton hitters would strand 8 base runners. Cale Wetwiska would walk 4 while striking out 3 tonight. He wasn’t getting much chase, just 17%, which allowed the walks to rack up. Still, he had a 1 pitch strike 67% of the time. He’d go 5 innings and still get the win as Pedro Garcia got the save.
