Whitecaps' Roberto Campos runs to first base after a hit against the Lugnuts in the first inning on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Jackson Field in Lansing.

West Michigan Whitecaps 2026 Preview

Following a historic run that resulted in a 2025 Midwest League championship title, the West Michigan Whitecaps enter the 2026 season with some new faces at the helm, but the goal remains the same.

Bringing a league title back to LMCU Ballpark.

With 2025 Whitecaps’ manager, Tony Cappuccilli receiving the promotion to oversee Double-A Erie for the 2026 season, West Michigan will welcome René Rivera. The 42-year-old Puerto Rican native began his professional baseball career in 2001, signing with the Seattle Mariners and eventually making his Major League debut in 2004.

In his first year managing the Class-A Lakeland Flying Tigers in 2025, Rivera and his staff led the Flying Tigers to their first Florida State League championship, their first since 2012.

With 2025 West Michigan pitching coach Nick Green joining Cappuccilli in Erie, the Whitecaps have added pitching coach Dan Ricabal, a familiar face if you’ve followed West Michigan over the last several years. Ricabal served as the Whitecaps’ pitching coach during the 2023 and 2024 seasons before moving up to Double-A Erie in 2025.

Hitting coach Matt Mallot returns this season after an impressive debut with the championship-winning lineup last season.

Rounding out the staff is Bench Coach Cole Roberts, who enters the 2026 season making his professional coaching debut. The son of Dodgers manager Dave Roberts originally signed with the Diamondbacks as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and ended his playing career with the Phillies minor league system in 2025.

In the broadcast booth, West Michigan will welcome back veteran Midwest League play-by-play voice Dan Hasty and his broadcast partner, Nate Wangler.

On the field, you are going to see a collection of familiar faces mixed in with some of the contributors from the 2025 Florida State League championship roster. Let’s take a look at what you can expect on the field for West Michigan this season:

Whitecaps Pitching Staff (15)

POS Name POS Name
RHP Logan Berrier RHP Zack Lee
RHP Thomas Bruss RHP Carlos Lequerica
RHP Rayner Castillo RHP Carlos Marcano
RHP Lucas Elissalt RHP Hayden Minton
RHP Jalen Evans LHP Gabriel Reyes
RHP Antonio Florido LHP Ethan Sloan
RHP Ryan Harvey RHP CJ Weins
RHP Duque Hebbert

When it comes to the starting rotation, we could see a bit of shifting to start the year amid the mix of youth with some veteran arms.

Building an impressive start through his Midwest League debut last season, Lucas Elissalt is expected to be a staple, with Hayden Minton also making his return to the hill.

Struggling with some inconsistencies last season with the Whitecaps, Rayner Castillo forced the hand of the coaching staff to try him in both a starting and a relief role. The youngster works smarter in shorter stints, which could lead to a role out of the bullpen this season.

Following up on a solid Midwest League campaign in 2025 and a stint with Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic, Carlos Lequerica returns to the bullpen for West Michigan, bringing with him a veteran presence for the younger arms joining the staff.

With Dan Ricabal’s extensive experience, the Whitecaps rotation will have some solid leadership to guide them in 2026.

West Michigan Position Players (13)

Among the names returning to the West Michigan lineup, fan favorite Roberto Campos will be back in the Whitecaps outfield, joining returning outfielders Jackson Strong and Patrick Lee.

Strong, the Tigers’ 7th-round draft pick in 2024, made his Midwest League debut in 2025, posting four doubles, four home runs, six RBI, and a pair of stolen bases over 23 games last season.

Originally slated to join West Michigan to start the year, 2025 8th-round pick Nick Dumesnil suffered a left hamate excision and will start the year on the West Michigan injured List.

Also returning are Woody Hadeen and Garrett Pennington, both of whom, like Jackson Strong, started the 2025 season with Lakeland and were part of the summer promotion group who joined the Whitecaps for the second half of their championship campaign.

Coming off 38 stolen bases combined between Lakeland and West Michigan in 2025, there has been word that Woody Hadeen has added some muscle, which should help to round out his offensive profile and overall power capabilities.

Pennington, 25, played a mix of defensive assignments in 2025, working primarily at first base and in left field, as well as serving as the designated hitter. Over 36 games at the plate for the Whitecaps, the NC State product slashed .321/.383/.478 with a pair of home runs and an .861 OPS.

Some of the new faces will include 22-year-old New Zealander Clayton Campbell and 22-year-old Venezuelan native Ricardo Hurtado behind the plate. Hurtado played a massive role at the plate for the Flying Tigers in 2025, knocking 16 doubles, nine home runs, and 63 RBI.

University of Michigan alum Stephen Hrustich will round out the ‘Caps outfield, and 22-year-old Dominican native Cristian Santana, known for his franchise-record $2.95 million international signing bonus in 2021, will join the next wave of middle infielders for West Michigan.

While the 2026 roster leans more towards youth than experience, René Rivera made it abundantly clear last season that he enjoys a challenge.

The Whitecaps return home to LMCU Ballpark on Tuesday, April 7th, at 6:35 ET against the Great Lakes Loons.
