The Tigers said goodbye to a teammate and then bludgeoned the Orioles. Things weren’t as great on the farm, with affiliates going just 1-5. But we did get several promising level debuts. Read all about it below!
Triple-A: Toledo Mud Hens (L 6-4) @ Columbus Clippers – 50-52 Overall
The Mud Hens hopped on I-75 (and US 23) to travel to their in-state rival for a West Division clash. But, like many games tonight, things didn’t start out terribly well. The Hens managed to load the bases with one out in the 1st, but they couldn’t cash in any runs. And then the Clippers hopped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to two walks and a monster 3-run homer from Ralphy Velazquez.
Veteran backstop Carlos Perez hit a solo shot to get Toledo on the board, his 3rd home run since joining the Hens last week. But Columbus got the run right back thanks to a solo shot from Kody Huff. In the 5th Corey Julks launched his 14th home run of the season, but once again the Clippers stretched their lead to four. Another homer from Perez and Max Anderson’s 10th homer of the year made things interesting late, but Toledo couldn’t plate any more runs.

Erie SeaWolves (L 12-3) vs. Akron RubberDucks – 19-9 2nd Half, 55-41 Overall
Akron jumped all over Erie starter Max Alba in this one, with two runs in the 1st, three runs in the 2nd, and two more runs in the 3rd. They never really cooled down, finishing the night with 19 hits in an easy win. The SeaWolves tried to fight back, plating a single run in the bottom of the first on a Peyton Graham double. They added two more runs in the 4th on back-to-back solo home runs from Justice Bigbie and Andrew Jenkins. That chased Ducks starter Sean Matson, but ultimately ended Erie’s chances. The Akron bullpen tossed 5.2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief to remove all doubt.

West Michigan Whitecaps (W 4-0) vs. Beloit SkyCarp – 17-14 2nd Half, 41-54 Overall
All-time Whitecaps home run king Izaac Pacheco wasted little time adding to his total in this one, blasting a 2-run shot in the 1st to give West Michigan all the runs they would need. Caleb Shpur added an RBI single in the 2nd, and Clayton Campbell scored on a wild pitch in the 6th inning to make it 4-0. After that the pitching and defense handled the rest. It was also a notable night for debuts, with Edian Espinal picking up two hits and a walk in addition to catching a shutout, and first baseman Beau Ankeney registering his first High-A knock.

Lakeland Flying Tigers (L 10-7) @ Tampa Tarpons – 14-17 2nd Half, 45-51 Overall
This one got ugly pretty quickly, and for a long time it seemed like a couple of debuts would be the only highlights. The first-place Tarpons ambushed Flygers starter Grayson Grinsell, launching three home runs as part of a 5-run first inning. They added another run in the 2nd, and the rout was on. Grinsell managed to give his team two more scoreless innings, and Javier Osorio hit a 430-foot bomb in the 5th to get Lakeland on the board.
Tampa seemingly ended any hopes of a comeback with a pair of runs in both the 7th and 8th innings. It was 10-1, and the game was clearly over. Except Lakeland went bonkers in the top of the 9th. Ronald Ramirez, who doubled in the 2nd inning for his first Low-A hit, led off the 9th with his first Low-A homer. A walk and an error paved the way for an RBI double from Michael Oliveto, who was also making his Low-A debut. Anibal Salas followed with a 3-run homer, and then Nick Dumesnil launched a solo shot. Suddenly it was 10-7 with just one out in the 9th. But Tampa changed pitchers an struck out the final two batters to end the threat.

The Florida Complex League is now complete, but the Dominican Summer League is still going strong.
DSL Tigers 1 (L 7-6, 8 innings) @ DSL Giants Black – (16-25 Overall)
The Tigers pounced on the Giants in a 5-run 3rd inning, with a 3-run triple from Douglas Olivo serving as the biggest blow. But the Giants battled back, scratching across two runs in the bottom of the 3rd, and then evening things in the 5th. The game went to extras, and Enny Rodriguez scored on an error, but that’s all the Tigers could muster. Then the Giants quickly walked it off with a walk, a bunt single, and an error.
DSL Tigers 2 (L 8-7) vs. DSL NYY Yankees (22-19 Overall)
The Yankees jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 6-2 in this one, but the Tigers kept fighting back. They eventually took the a 7-6 lead on a strikeout and wild pitch in the 5th, but the Yankees tied it the next inning, and then plated the game-winning run in the 8th. Santiago Venture led the way for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and a steal.
