Tigers Minor League Recap – 7/30

Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)

Final: Columbus 9 – Toledo 5

Max Anderson, 2B — 1-for-5, HR, R, RBI
Trei Cruz, CF — 3-for-5, 2B, R

Troy Watson — 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Not a lot of great choices today pitching wise. Troy Watson had a 29% Whiff%, throwing 6 different pitches. He gave up the 2 runs off a double in the 8th and a sac fly in the 9th when the Mud Hens were already out of it.

Game notes:

Let’s start with the big news that affects the Mud Hens directly — Max Clark getting the call to the big leagues. Can’t wait to see him show his talents off in Detroit!

As for the game. The one seemed like it was over early on. And to an extent, that was true. Dylan File started the game and went 5 innings but he had a rough 2nd and not good 3rd inning where he gave up 6 runs. A pair of 2-run shots sandwiched a sac fly in the 2nd giving the Clippers the early 5-0 lead and then a solo shot in the 3rd would prove to be the game winning run.

The Mud Hens wouldn’t just bow out though. They’d have their own big inning when they’d score 4 runs of the starter L.T. Allen in the 5th. Jace Jung would hit his 17th HR of the season and immediately after, Max Anderson would hit his 11th. They’d tack on 1 more run when Carlos Perez would hit his 5th HR in 4 games with the Mud Hens and extend his HR streak to 4.

Hayden Minton — 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K. Hayden got his first AA victory tonight throwing 5 scoreless innings giving up just a double and 4 base runners. His 8 Ks is 3 more than his previous AA high.

Game Notes:

Some early offense and a great start by Hayden Minton helped getting the Seawolves a win. They scored 2 runs in the 1st on an Andrew Jenkins singles, his first of 4 on the night. There wouldn’t be any more runs until the Rubber Ducks scored their first run of the game in the top of the 6th making it a 1 run game. Then the Seawolves would blow it open in the bottom of the inning scoring 3 more runs making it 5-1. For good measures they’d drive in 4 more in the bottom of the 8th to really put the game out of reach.

After Hayden Minton, Johan Simon, Eric Silva, and Tyler Owens would throw the final 4 innings, getting 3 Ks, and allowing 2 runs (1 earned) to get them to 57-41. And the Seawolves can welcome a new addition to the staff as Zane Burkhart was acquired for Jake Rogers tonight.

West Michigan Whitecaps (High-A)

Juan Hernandez, 3B — 0-for-0, 2 R, 2 BB

Lucas Elissalt — 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. For the second straight week and third time in the his last 4 starts, Lucas went 5 innings, struck out 5 and walked 1 or fewer batters. 5.1 IP would be a season high and his third longer career outing.

Game Notes:

Most of the fun offensively would come in the later innings of this game. Through 6, the score would be 3-2 where the Whitecaps would lead. Though that could have been much worse given the Beloit starter, Nate Payne, would walk 5 and give up 2 hits in 3 IP. Which would be the opposite of the West Michigan starter, Lucas Elissalt.

Then the bottom of the 7th would come and the Whitecaps would knock in 5 runs, 4 of which came with 2 outs and the Whitecaps would have the 8-2 lead. Then in the 8th, again with 2 outs, a Beau Ankeney triple would score 2 more to make the lead even bigger. It would look like they’d be cruising to a victory.

Then in the top of the 4th, CJ Weins would have an inning he would rather forget about. He’d allow 4 base runners and be charged with 4 ER would getting a single out. Logan Berrier would come in and complete the game, stopping the comeback.

Lakeland Flying Tigers (Single-A)

Cale Wetwiska — 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Back-to-back great starts for Cale. This time he’d walk fewer batter than last time and go deeper into the game. His 27% Whiff% isn’t as good as last time, but his fastball that averaged 95.7 had a great average IVB of 19”.

Game Notes:

Like Erie, West Michigan, and DSL Tigers 1 before them today, Lakeland would score 1st in the game and put up runs in the 1st inning. They would then also score 2 in the 4th, 3 in the 5th, and 3 more in the 7th before Tampa would score their first run of the game, a 3 run inning in the 8th. Their power would be on display with Zach MacDonald hitting 2 HRs and Jesus Pinto adding his 6th of the year.

Angel De Los Santos would struggle in this game going just 1-for-6 and getting 4 Ks, but he would also get his first A ball RBI and SB and make this nifty play.

Despite giving up 3 runs tonight, none of the 3 were earned and the staff would throw 9 innings allowing 7 base runners and striking out 9. It was another big win tonight for the Tigers organization.
