Detroit Tigers draft pick Grayson Grinsell signs his pro contract.

It was a split night on the Detroit Tigers farm, with two teams suffering ugly losses, and two pulling out solid wins. Check out all the details below.

Triple-A: Toledo Mud Hens (L 18-4) @ Louisville Bats – 7-9 Overall

Let’s just hope this is the worst Mud Hens game of the year. Max Clark hit a hard single in the first but Toledo couldn’t get him home, and then Louisville went to work on Sawyer Gipson-Long. And everyone else the Mud Hens put out there. Blake Dunn doubled on the first pitch of the game and then scored on a pair of fly outs. Things would only get worse from there.

The Bats started the 2nd inning with back-to-back homers from JJ Bleday and Michael Toglia. Then the first four batters reached in the 3rd inning to make it a 6-0 game. The Hens scored in the bottom of the frame thanks to an Eduardo Valencia walk, a Jace Jung double, and a Trei Cruz sac fly. But an error on Gipson-Long and another homer made it an 8-1 game.

Brenan Hanifee was the next victim, allowing five runs in the 5th. Then it was Cole Waites in the 6th, giving up a 2-run homer to Ivan Johnson. Konnor Pilkington was the only Mud Hens hurler to escape unscathed, working a perfect 7th. And Eduardo Valencia provided Toledo with their only real highlight of the game, a 435-foot home run to center.

And then outfielder Cal Stevenson, who hit a walk-off grand slam on Sunday, came in to pitch. Louisville responded by hitting two more home runs, giving them seven long balls on the game. Best to forget this one.

Erie SeaWolves (L 13-8) vs. Harrisburg Senators – 2-8 Overall

The Erie SeaWolves can’t seem to get out of their own way. Starter Eric Silva put the first two batters on and allowed a run on a sac fly, but he escaped the inning without any more damage. And then the offense gave him another chance, plating three runs in the bottom of the inning on a Seth Stephenson double, some bad Senators defense, and a two-bagger from Izaac Pacheco. But then Silva gave it all back. And then some.

Harrisburg’s first seven batters reached, bringing home six runs. Silva didn’t record an out, and his ERA now sits at 34.36 on the season. The Senators tacked on two more in the 3rd and the game appeared headed for blowout territory. But credit to Erie. They kept the score steady at 9-3, and then in the 7th they battled back with five runs. Peyton Graham brought home two with a single, but the most impactful play of the game may have been Brett Callahan’s 2-run double right after. Callahan made it a one-run game with no outs, but he went for 3rd and was tagged out, ultimately ending the rally.

And then Harrisburg took advantage of two Tanner Kohlhepp walks, two errors, and three doubles in the top of the 8th. That made it a 13-8 game, and that’s the way it stayed.

Seth Stephenson 1/4, 2B, 2R, RBI

West Michigan Whitecaps (W 8-6) @ Lansing Lugnuts – 5-5 Overall

The Whitecaps jumped all over Lansing’s starter Jackson Finley in the first. Woody Hadeen led off with an infield single, although he appeared to tweak something and had to leave the game. But a triple by Roberto Campos and doubles from Garrett Pennington and Ricardo Hurtado made it an early 3-0 lead for West Michigan.

The Lugnuts came right back in the bottom of the 1st with a 2-out, 2-run homer off Carlos Marcano. But that was all the damage Marcano allowed, and the Whitecaps led the rest of the way. Hurtado hit a solo blast in the 4th to make it 4-2, and then doubles from Junior Tillien and Jackson Strong made it a 5-2 game in the 5th. The Caps put up another run in the 6th, and then two more in the 7th on a Samuel Gil single and a Patrick Lee double.

Lansing made it a little scary in the 9th, scoring twice off Ethan Sloan, and bringing the tying run to the plate with just one out. But Sloan ultimately got the job done, and the Whitecaps are back to .500 on the season.

Woody Hadeen 1/1
Junior Tillie 1/3, 2B, 2R, BB

Lakeland Flying Tigers (W 3-0) vs. Dayton Tortugas – 8-2 Overall

The Flying Tigers got back in the win column thanks to some brilliant pitching and timely hitting. Unfortunately, much of the game went dark with technical difficulties. But we got a few highlights. And we can read box scores.

Grayson Grinsell made his second professional start, and he was stellar. The southpaw with a funky arm angle was nearly perfect, allowing just one walk while striking out six over four scoreless frames. Grinsell induced 11 whiffs, with all five swings against his nasty changeup coming up empty. But Reed Moring was just as good for Fort Myers, keeping the Flying Tigers off the board. He did scatter six hits over five innings, including another absolute missile from Bryce Rainer, but he also picked up 16 whiffs. So the game was scoreless through five.

But Lakeland finally broke through in the 6th thanks to singles from Beau Ankeney and Jesus Pinto, and wild pitching from reliever Kolten Smith. Sergio Tapia made it 2-0 with a two-out single that brought home Pinto. Luke Hoskins allowed a two-out knock in the 6th to end Lakeland’s no-hit bid, but that was the only time the Mighty Mussels threatened at all. Ankeney added another run on a Low-A special – a 200-foot high pop up that no one called. Eliseo Mota did the rest, closing out the game with two perfect innings, including three strikeouts.

Jude Warwick 3/4, 2B, R, BB, K, SB(2)
Bryce Rainer 2/5, 2B, 2K
Beau Ankeney 2/5, 2B, R, RBI K
Jesus Pinto 1/4, R, RBI
