RJ Petit

Physical Description

RJ Petit is an imposing figure on the mound, standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 300 pounds. His large frame and three-quarters arm action allow him to generate significant downhill plane on his pitches, making it challenging for hitters to elevate the ball. Despite his size, Petit exhibits a relatively smooth delivery, which contributes to his ability to maintain consistent velocity and command.

Fastball – 55

Petit’s fastball sits in the low to mid-90s, occasionally touching higher velocities. The pitch’s natural sink induces ground balls, effectively keeping hitters off balance. His ability to command the fastball has improved, contributing to his increased strikeout rates. Baseball America reported a gain in his velocity in 2024, which helps set up his secondaries better.

Slider – 50

His slider has developed into a reliable secondary offering, featuring sharp break that generates swings and misses. The improved depth and consistency of this pitch was a part of his success in Double-A in 2024.

Changeup – 45

Petit also utilizes a changeup, though it remains less consistent than his other offerings. Still needs work to get outs against lefties.

Control – 45

Over the past season, Petit has demonstrated improved control, reducing his walk rates and effectively locating his pitches within the strike zone. He was one of the most consistent relievers in the system last season.

Overall Outlook

In the 2024 season with Double-A Erie, RJ Petit posted a 3.68 ERA over 58.2 innings, recording 76 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.18. If he continues to throw strikes and keep hitters off balance, Petit could emerge as another bullpen arm for the Tigers, potentially making his MLB debut either in 2025 or 2026.
