Toledo Mud Hens infielder Max Anderson has been named the Tigers Minor League Report 2026 Player of the Year after putting together one of the most complete offensive seasons in the Detroit Tigers farm system.
The Tigers Minor League Report awards were established in 2023 as an independent recognition of players throughout Detroit’s minor league system. Our selections are based on season-long production, performance relative to level and competition, consistency, development and what we have observed while covering the system throughout the year.
For Anderson, the case starts with both production and consistency.
The 24-year-old enters the final stretch of the season batting .300/.385/.489 with an .874 OPS, 17 home runs, 22 doubles, 58 RBIs and 66 runs scored in 107 games. He has collected 122 hits in 407 at-bats while drawing 53 walks against only 65 strikeouts.
Most importantly, Anderson has done the bulk of that work at Triple-A Toledo. That mattered in our decision. This was not simply a player putting up numbers against younger competition in the lower minors. Anderson produced against the most advanced pitching he has faced as a professional while maintaining one of the better combinations of contact, power and plate discipline in the Tigers system.
One of the biggest developments in Anderson’s game has been his approach. He has always shown an ability to hit, but this season he has paired that offensive production with improved strike-zone control. Through 473 plate appearances, Anderson has struck out just 65 times while drawing 53 walks, a combination that stands out when considering the level of competition.
His season also included stretches where he looked like one of the hottest hitters in the minors, along with recognition on a larger stage through his selection to the Futures Game. More than anything, though, it was his ability to sustain production over the course of the season that separated him.
There were several strong candidates throughout a deep Tigers system. Detroit had younger prospects with higher national rankings, players who posted impressive power numbers and others who put together excellent stretches at different levels. Anderson’s combination of average, on-base ability, power, contact and upper-level performance made him our choice.
The Tigers selected Anderson in the second round of the 2023 draft out of Nebraska with the 45th overall pick. Since then, Tigers Minor League Report has watched his progression through the system, from the lower levels to Erie and now Toledo. The 2026 season represents his strongest overall offensive performance to date and puts him in position to continue pushing toward Detroit.
The purpose of the TMLR awards has always been fairly simple. We spend the season watching these players at every level of the system, and the awards are our way of recognizing the work and development that happen long before a player reaches Comerica Park.
